A Divorce He Regrets

Chapter 32

Chapter 32:

My initial shock morphed into anger. “Are you joking?” I demanded. “Liam’s been treated for years! He has a disease—one that I’ve paid for him to fight! And now you’re saying it doesn’t exist?”

Dominic’s voice broke in, firm but restrained. “Shut up, Sullivan. Let the doctor finish.”

I clenched my jaw, wanting to argue, but there was something in Dominic’s tone—something I couldn’t quite read—that stopped me. He gestured for the doctor to continue, and the man, after a pause, explained, “What I’m saying, Mr. Sullivan, is that your son has been poisoned. For years. He was induced into this coma artificially to make his symptoms mimic a disease. That’s why we need to find the doctor responsible. There’s a lie buried here, and it’s caused Liam years of unnecessary suffering.”

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. Poisoned? My son had been poisoned? I’d been so close to having him back, to saving him, and now this? Now I was faced with a reality that sounded like something out of a nightmare. Shock mixed with a sickening dread, the kind that left me hollow and trembling. “Why?” I whispered, the question slipping out in disbelief. “Why would anyone do this?”

Dominic’s eyes were fixed on me, his expression unreadable. “I asked myself the same thing when you first came to me with this request. When I found out you wanted Raina to give her marrow, I consulted with a specialist—who suggested bringing her here. She refused, of course.”

The restraint in his voice grated on me, a tension I couldn’t quite place. But why hadn’t I ever questioned it before? I could’ve reviewed Liam’s medical charts, done my own research. Why hadn’t I? Had I really just been that stupid, that trusting of a single doctor? The feeling of betrayal simmered, and I clenched my fists.noveldrama

I excused myself, needing to clear my head, though there was nothing calming about the storm raging inside me. This was my fault. I should’ve questioned everything sooner, should’ve been more vigilant. I’d trusted the wrong person, and now my son had paid the price. Guilt clawed at me, the weight of it crushing.

When I returned to Dominic, I had made a firm decision. “I’ll handle this myself. I’ll have the doctor questioned.” But as I drove back to the original hospital, that sense of urgency only intensified. I needed answers. I had to know who was behind this and why it had happened. But when I arrived, I was met with nothing but confusion. The doctor was gone, and no one seemed to know where he had gone—whether he had resigned or disappeared without a trace.

Had he known we were going to uncover the truth? Or was he just another pawn in a twisted game that someone else was playing? The questions swirled in my mind, mocking me, as I came up empty-handed.

All I could do was wonder—how many more lies had I believed? How many more truths had I missed, buried under layers of assumptions and misplaced trust in the wrong people?

RAINA

I woke up slowly, my body heavy, pain pulsing through every part of me. The dull ache in my ribs sharpened as I tried to shift, but a voice stopped me.

“Don’t move.”

I turned my head slightly to see Dominic standing beside the bed, his expression a mix of relief and worry. His voice had a calm but firm tone, one I’d come to trust.

My first thought was Liam. My heart raced. “Where’s Liam?” I managed to whisper, though panic crept into my voice.

“Raina, he’s fine,” he reassured me. “You don’t need to worry. Just rest for now.” I felt a wave of relief, though the lingering fear gnawed at me. But before I could press further, the doctor entered the room. He wore a gentle smile, nodding as he approached my bed.
