Betrayal At The Altar

Chapter 41

Chapter 41

Adrian and Rachel made eye contact and smiled before teasing, “We don’t want to leave, either, but we can’t help that the head of the family doesn’t

want to see us.”

“Brat, stop babbling nonsense!” Arthur snapped as he raised his cane furiously in an attempt to hit Adrian with it.

Rachel quickly stepped forward, reached her arm out, and held the cane that Arthur had raised in his hand. “Grandpa, it’s my fault. Simmer down.”

“I thought you had long forgotten about this family after living out there on your own for three years!” Arthur exclaimed as he raised his head slightly and sighed, holding his tears back with all his might.

Hearing his words, Rachel’s teardrops rolled down her cheeks uncontrollably.

Back then, Arthur was dead against her decision to marry Louis because he thought he was unreliable and their families were incompatible.

However, at that time, Rachel strongly believed love could overcome all odds. In the end, the facts proved that her determination was ridiculous. It really wasn’t worth it to give her family up for the sake of a man who did not love her.

Rachel sniffled and suppressed her sobs. “Grandpa, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have disobeyed you back then.”

“Rae–Rae, I’ve never blamed you,” Arthur said, rubbing her head gently. He continued with righteous indignation. “I’ve long told you that the Smith family is not worthy of you at all. Yet, you refused to listen to me, and you insisted on marrying Louis Smith despite having to sever ties with us. The truth has

proven that my judgment was right. The Smith family is a bunch of crooks! Just like your mother, you won’t come to your senses until you’ve experienced failure yourself!”

With her arms around Arthur’s neck, she snuggled up in his arms obediently like she used to whenever she got mistreated as a child. She said playfully, “Grandpa, I know my mistakes. I won’t make a silly mistake again in the future.”

Arthur gently patted her shoulder and said, “No matter what, I’m glad

you’ve decided to return.”

After getting a grip on her feelings, Rachel asked, “Grandpa, what do you want for lunch? How about I cook for you?”

“I really want some barbecued ribs,” Adrian interjected without holding back.

“Make your own if you want some!” Arthur chided, glowering at him. “You’re almost 40 years old and still don’t have a wife. All you do is leech off of your family. How shameless!”

Afterward, he pulled Rachel’s hand and said affectionately, “Rae–Rae, why don’t I ask the chefs to prepare your favorite clam chowder?”

Adrian was speechless.

He seemed to have returned to the days when he received partial

treatment.

During lunch, the men of the Johnson family eagerly rushed to help Rachel to the food.

Arthur said, “Have more. Look how thin you are now.”

“Grandpa, eat some too.” Rachel stood up and scooped a bowl of soup for Arthur.

Arthur was holding the soup delightfully as if it were a pot of treasures.

After lunch, Arthur called Tom into the study room.

As soon as he entered, Arthur cut straight to the chase. “What do you think of the Smith family?”

Since she was little, Rachel had always been doted on and showered with love by Arthur. No one had bullied her before. Hence, Arthur was exasperated after hearing about the torment the Smith family put her through.

No one was allowed to bully his granddaughter as they pleased!

“You mean…” Tom asked, feeling a little puzzled about what Arthur was thinking.
