Chapter 36
Jonas looked at Oliver in front of him with an incredulous expression, sweat dripping down his back. He never imagined that someone his age could be so vile. If he had known, he definitely wouldn’t have gone along with this plan that would end up selling him out.
“What? Do you have a better idea? Or are you planning to go serve time in jail and have your parents visit you on holidays?” Oliver’s cold gaze assessed Jonas. His demeanor was relaxed.
Jonas instinctively took a couple of steps back, pointing a sháky finger at Oliver. “You…”
He took a deep breath, looking at Oliver. Oliver just patiently waited for his answer. He wouldn’t let this drag him down. A flicker of cold look flashed in Jo**s’s eyes.
“Well? Have you thought it over?” Oliver asked impatiently, his annoyed expression scared Jonas.
Though the thugs were all involved in some shady business, even together they didn’t possess the same ruthlessness as Oliver did.
After a long pause, Jonas opened his mouth several times, but no words came out. Deep down, he realized that agreeing with Oliver meant they would be in this mess together, and getting out of it would be nearly impossible.
If he turned himself in now, considering his age, he might get a lighter sentence. He carefully scrutinized Oliver, weighing the consequences of acting on his thoughts.
Before Oliver could grow more impatient, Jonas lowered his head, feeling defeated. “I… I agree to your plan.” He nearly bit through his own lip, knowing that this might be the biggest regret of his life.
Hearing this, a satisfied smile spread across Oliver’s face, as though he was thinking, ‘Isn’t this what you should’ve done from the start?’
“Great. Listen carefully to what I’m about to say. I don’t want any trouble later. If anyone asks you about this, you just say Daisy bribed you. The Wilder family won’t let a scandal like this leak out, and you’ll stay safe. But if you don’t follow through…”
Oliver’s voice trailed off, but the seriousness on his face intensified. He looked at their pale faces and continued, “Mr. Wilder won’t let you off easily, especially since Laura is highly valued by him. This is a picture of Daisy. She’s a senior at Narston High School, Class 1. That’s all I want to say. Think it over.”
With that, Oliver felt his task was complete. He never believed that Jonas and his crew would turn on him or stab him in the back. He strolled away from the secluded path with an air of confidence.
Once Oliver had left, Jeremy, a young man with dyed yellow hair suddenly collapsed to the ground, tears streaming down his face. “We went along with this because you said the task was to scare her. Now what are we supposed to do?” Jeremy complained, his earlier respect for Jonas evaporating.
Selfish people like Jeremy only worked with Jonas when there was something to gain, but when danger arose, they vanished. Jonas looked at Jeremy and let out a self-deprecating laugh. He crouched down to meet Jeremy’s gaze, “Are you complaining now, Jeremy? Why didn’t you just back out before? You even tried to bribe another guy to take your place.”Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.
Jeremy offered a strange smile, sna***ing the photo from Jo**s’s hand. To his surprise, there was a credit card tucked behind it, and Jeremy’s greed lit up his eyes as he stared at the card. The fear he felt earlier vanished, replaced by overwhelming desire.
“Jonas, I’m sorry. I got too emotional just now. Since that’s the case, we might as well do what he said. Otherwise, we won’t come out of this well,” Jeremy said, looking at Jonas with surprise. His gaze had been fixed on the card stuck behind the photo, and when no one was paying attention, he quietly ripped it off.
Jonas wasn’t blind to Jeremy’s character. He scanned the group, noting the greedy expressions on their faces as they glanced at the card, completely oblivious to what it truly represented.
A bitter smile crept onto J**s face as he coldly remarked, “Do you even know what this card means?”
“Money! How much do you think is on it? If I’d known he was this rich, I would’ve asked for more back then!” Jeremy’s greedy demeanor made it look like he wanted to claim the card for himself.
His words sparked agreement among the others. A short guy piped up, looking at Jonas, “Why don’t we just do as Oliver said? Since the Wilder family cares so much about their reputation, they definitely won’t let anything happen to Daisy. This way, we can dodge trouble.”
“Dodge trouble? Do you know this card could ruin our future? Mr. Wilder won’t let anything happen to Daisy, but he will find someone to take the fall. So who do you think that person will be?” Jonas said.
Hearing this, the short boy panicked. He hadn’t considered the possibility.
But Jeremy, oblivious to the card’s potential danger, retorted, “So what? We’re still minors! Even if Mr. Wilder wanted to harm us, what could he do? Besides, we just wanted to scare Laura. We didn’t do anything terrible.”
Once someone’s eyes are clouded by greed, they’ll do anything to keep what they think they can grab.
“Jonas, are you scared or something?” Jeremy asked and then turned to the rest of the group. “Come on, look at him! Do you really want to keep following him? Let’s take the money and live it up!” Jeremy exclaimed, waving the card in front of the others like a flag.
In the end, Jeremy left with three other guys, leaving behind Jonas and a shorter boy. The boy watched as Jeremy and the others walked away, not a hint of envy on his face. He felt lost, hoping Jonas could help him escape this mess.
Just then, Daisy jumped down from the building, landing with a thud. “Hey, guys. I’m Daisy.” She extended her hand, her eyes sparkling as she looked at Jonas and the short boy, while Lance followed her down, landing with a loud bang. The short boy flinched like a startled rabbit, trembling slightly. Daisy noticed and smiled warmly at him.
“Sorry, I overheard your whole conversation. I’m just curious as to what you are planning to do,” Daisy said, grinning playfully, her expression full of mischief.
