Don’t Fall for the Billionaire Lover

Chapter 1066

Connor had never seen Jeffery this shaken before.

Truth be told, Jeffery was never much of a father. He hardly ever got involved in his kids' arguments-he barely even stepped in when things got ugly between him and Claire. Unless it was a matter of life and death, he kept his distance.

Still, Connor always sensed that Jeffery didn't totally lack love for them. It was there, just buried deep. Maybe he saw family drama as nothing more than a passing storm, not worth getting worked up over.

Jeffery's emotions always seemed... incomplete. He never knew how to show affection. Sometimes, Connor wondered if his father was more machine than man —cold, detached, all logic and no feeling. Other times, he imagined Jeffery just hid his love so deep, no one could find it.

But now, Jeffery slumped into his chair like he'd been hit by something he couldn't fight. He kept muttering to himself, over and over: "Karma, vengeful ghosts, a life traded for a life, may you live a long life..."

His face kept changing-confusion, pain, disbelief—until finally, he just looked devastated. "How did it come to this? How could this happen?" he whispered.

Chloe and the others all frowned, watching him struggle.

Chloe stepped closer. "Jeffery, what do those words mean? What was my mentor trying to tell us?"

Jeffery finally looked up at her, his eyes swirling with complicated emotions. "Your mentor... was Nemo?"

Chloe nodded.

Jeffery's eyes flickered with something unreadable. "Of course. No wonder you were able to break my plans. I should have guessed."

He hesitated, then asked, "And your friend? Who is he?"

Chloe didn't miss a beat. "Grant. His name is Grant." She made sure to mention the Grevenberg family, watching Jeffery closely.

Jeffery's jaw clenched. "Grant... He's a Grevenberg, then."

Kash stepped forward, deciding to put it all out there. "Jeffery, were you involved

in the Grevenberg family massacre all those years ago?"

Jeffery turned to him, his gaze sharp and icy, the kind of look that sent a chill right through you. Even Kash felt it.

Still, Kash pressed on. "You might not know, but a lot has happened recently. Grant's been pulling strings, trying to take down the Sartori family The business wars against the Four Families these last couple of years, my sister going missing, Suzanne's accident, even your daughter Claire's death-they all trace back to him."

"He's so obsessed with revenge against the Sartori family because he says you're the man who destroyed everything he had."

Everything was out in the open now. All that was left was the truth.

Connor finally spoke, his voice low. "Dad, did you really have something to do with what happened to the Grevenberg family?"

He wasn't even sure what answer he wanted to hear.

Jeffery just sat there, staring at the blood-stained letter in his hands. His eyes

seemed to cloud over, lost somewhere far away in the past.

"Yes," Jeffery said at last, his voice empty. "The Grevenberg family's destruction is absolutely connected to me."

Silence fell. Everyone was stunned.

Jeffery went on, "I was an orphan, born in the most chaotic times. An assassin's organization took me i My entire childhood was endles training, fighting the other kids There were five hundred of us at the start. In the end, only two

survived-me and Shadow."

"When we turned eighteen, they started sending us out on missions. I remember it perfectly-my seventeenth job was to eliminate the Grevenberg family. Thirty-eight people, every single one. The rule was simple: complete eighteen missions and you could earn your freedom, pay them back for eighteen years of raising you. Or you could stay, join the inner circle. Shadow and I both chose to walk away." noveldrama
