Chapter 866
Finally, both of them were worn out. They stopped and leaned against a gigantic oak tree, so massive it would take at least seven or eight people to wrap their arms around its trunk. Sitting beneath its sprawling branches, Chloe rested her head on Connor's shoulder.
"Connor, any idea where we are?" Chloe asked.noveldrama
Connor shook his head. "No clue. Could be some forest out west or maybe an island. The trees are so thick here, they block out the sky. Can't even see the stars to figure out where we are."
Chloe's heart sank a little. "Do you think they'll find us?" she asked softly.
Connor gazed upwards. All he could see were the towering trees, packed together like a natural fortress. "I don't know. We just have to wait and see."
Chloe squeezed Connor's hand. "No matter what happens, we stick together. As long as you're with me, I'm not scared."
Connor turned to her, gently brushing her cheek. "I won't let anything happen to you."
"You should try to get some rest," Connor suggested tenderly.
Chloe leaned against him and dozed off, but it wasn't long before she was jolted awake by eerie howls echoing through the trees. Connor stood up too, instinctively moving to shield Chloe behind him.
Chloe quickly snapped to attention, noticing the eerie glow of green eyes all around them. She slowly stood up, realizing they were surrounded by a pack of wolves. The wolves' howls sent chills down her spine, and she could tell there were at least a dozen of them.
"Quick, climb up the tree!" Connor urged.
Connor clutched an AK-47 but was reluctant to use it. The forest was so quiet, it felt like the slightest noise could give them away. He knew Claire's people were on their trail, and gunfire would make it easy to pinpoint their location. He'd only shoot if there was absolutely no other choice.
Chloe scrambled up onto a branch of the oak tree. "Connor, hurry, get up here!" she called down.
Connor handed the AK-47 up to Chloe before turning to climb the tree himself. But just then, two fierce alpha waves lunged at him, teeth bared. They were lightning-fast One wolf managed to latch onto his shoe, dragging him back several feet.
Connor hit the ground, struggling to kick the wolf off but finding himself too weak.
Meanwhile, the rest of the pack closed in.
Chloe knew firing the gun was risky,
but at that moment, she had no choice. From her perch, she gripped the AK-4 and unleashed a burst of fire. The shots rang out, sending birds flapping wildly into the sky, and the wolves yelped and dropped to the ground.
Once the threat was gone, Chloe climbed down from the tree and rushed to Connor's side. His ankle was a mess, blood pouring from a deep bite wound. Tears welled up in her eyes from the panic and urgency of the moment.
But Connor was focused. "We need to move, now. My sister's people will be here any minute."
Chloe helped him to his feet, and they both heard the unmistakable rumble of engines approaching through the underbrush.
"They're coming..."
