Chapter 831 Protective Instincts

Edward's expression turned cold. After a moment of restraint, he pushed Madison away, turned around, and said, "What did you hear?"

Madison noticed his indifferent look and thought he probably didn't want her to hear those rumors. She quickly shook her head, "Nothing. I brought you lunch. Come and try it."

She linked her arm with Edward's and led him to the lounge area in the corner of the office.

Edward sat down on the sofa, watching her bustle around. For a moment, he was dazed. If the person he liked was Madison, would he have fewer troubles?

Madison handed him a fork, looking at him expectantly, "Edward, I made this myself. Try my cooking."

Edward snapped back to reality. Seeing Madison's face, all his fleeting thoughts vanished. He took the fork and began to eat.noveldrama

It was clear that the lunch was meticulously prepared by Madison, but to him, it was tasteless.

After just a few bites, he put down the fork.

Madison looked at him in surprise, "Edward, is it not good?"

"It's good," Edward shook his head, "I just don't have much of an appetite. Thinking about the company's issues gives me a headache."

Madison quickly comforted him, "Edward, don't worry. I think the financial crime unit is just making a fuss. Let me tell you, they took Phoebe away yesterday."

Edward hadn't heard about this. He sat up straight, "What did you say?"

Madison originally wanted to comfort him, but seeing his strong reaction to Phoebe's situation made her feel bad. However, since she brought up Phoebe, she couldn't be jealous now.

"Yesterday afternoon, the financial crime unit took Phoebe away. But they didn't have any concrete evidence, so they released her in the evening," Madison said.

Edward's face looked extremely grim.

After being rejected in his proposal, his pride was hurt, and he intended to give Phoebe the cold shoulder, not paying attention to her affairs. He didn't expect her to get into trouble.

"I understand, Madison. I have an important engagement this afternoon. You should go back first." Edward unceremoniously dismissed her.

Madison glanced at the barely touched lunch, the heart drawn with ketchup now broken, like her bleeding heart.

She regretted bringing up Phoebe to comfort Edward.

"Call me when you have time," Madison said forlornly as she left.

As soon as Madison left, Edward called his assistant and asked him to find out why Phoebe was taken by the financial crime unit. The assistant didn't expect that at this moment, Edward would be more concerned about Phoebe, who had rejected him, than his own company.

Shaking his head inwardly, he agreed to investigate.

As he left the office to look into the matter, he saw Madison emerging from the shadows.

"Miss Reynolds, you haven't left yet?" the assistant said awkwardly.

Madison glanced in the direction of Edward's office, grabbed the assistant's arm, and pulled him into the nearby emergency stairwell.

It didn't take much effort for her to learn from the assistant that Edward had asked him

to investigate Phoebe's situation. She felt both jealous and resentful.

Why?

Edward had already been rejected by Phoebe and became the laughingstock of the city, yet he still cared so much about her. Why?

The assistant, seeing Madison's face twisted with jealousy, didn't dare to stay any longer and quickly found an excuse to leave.

Madison, in her anger, threw her bag against the wall.

'Phoebe, I won't let you stand in my way forever.' Madison's eyes filled with a murderous intent.

Outside the emergency stairwell, whispers could be heard.

"Why is our company so unlucky, being implicated by a subsidiary? Now the financial

crime unit has set up an audit team in the company, causing panic. If they find something, will we lose our jobs? I heard someone maliciously reported us with evidence."

"It can't be that serious, right? Even if it's tax evasion, as long as we pay it back within the deadline, it should be fine. But if there's other illegal activity, that's another story." "Don't say that. Walls have ears. What if someone hears us?"

"Let's go, let's go."

Madison emerged from the stairwell, watching the backs of the two employees disappear. She frowned.

The Vanderbilt Group was under investigation because someone maliciously reported them, like how Vanessa dealt with Phoebe?

Who would want to target the Vanderbilt Group?

An answer was starting to take shape in Madison's mind. She gritted her teeth. She couldn't let anything happen to the Vanderbilt Group; she still wanted to marry into the Vanderbilt family.

The President's Office, Reynolds Group.

Theodore had just hung up the phone when he heard a commotion at the door. The next second, the door was pushed open.

Madison and Carol stood at the door. Carol tried to block Madison, but seeing Theodore look over, she immediately stood straight, "Mr. Reynolds, I told Miss Reynolds you were busy, but she insisted on coming in."

"You can leave. I'll handle this," Theodore said calmly.

Carol glared at Madison, then turned and left, closing the door behind her.

Madison walked to the desk, placing her hands on it, looking down at Theodore, "Theodore, did you maliciously report the Vanderbilt Group, causing the financial crime unit to look into their finances?"

Theodore squinted, "Madison, you can eat whatever you want, but you can't say whatever you want."

Madison gritted her teeth, "I know you've always resented Edward, but what about Phoebe? She had kids with a male escort. She's so lowly, yet you still target Edward because of her. You..."

Before Madison could finish, she felt a sudden pain in her forehead. Theodore had thrown a file at her, causing blood to stream down her face.

Theodore's face was grim, "Madison, no one can speak ill of her in front of me, not even you. Get out!"

Madison, holding her forehead, stared blankly at Theodore, "Theodore, what kind of spell did she cast on you to make you protect her like this?"

Theodore took a deep breath and pointed to the door, "Don't make me say it again. Get out!"

Madison, trembling with anger, glared at Theodore, her eyes reddening. She couldn't understand what charm Phoebe had that drove them all mad.

"Theodore, I'm about to marry into the Vanderbilt family. Please, leave them alone," Madison said angrily before turning and leaving.

Theodore was furious. He raised his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. Lawton knocked and entered, seeing Theodore's pained expression. He said, "Mr. Reynolds, I found out what you asked me to investigate yesterday." Theodore reached out to take the documents. When he saw the names "Queen Entertainment" and "The Johnson Group," he felt a surge of anxiety.

He quickly flipped through the investigation report and tossed it aside, "Who's in charge of the Johnson Group now? Bishop?"
