Legendary Football Superstar

Chapter 049: Gearing Up for Battle

"Bambi! Bambi! Bambi!"

The crowd's roar morphed into one massive chant, and Jack just stood there, dumbfounded, watching the sea of people go wild like a volcano about to blow. It wasn't ten million, not even ten thousand; more than half the Rose Bowl was on their feet, arms up, screaming their lungs out. Even crazier, the Bruins players on the sidelines were getting in on it too.

Jack's eyes started to water, and he couldn't help but stand up, throwing his right hand in the air, yelling with everyone else, "Bambi!"

That was his boy.

The first time they watched Luke play, he looked like a tiny speck among a bunch of giants. It seemed like he could barely catch his breath, and one little nudge would send him flying like a paper plane. Both he and Annie felt their hearts break for Luke, telling him to quit and maybe try basketball or something else. But Luke wouldn't budge, grinding it out step by step.

When he faced crap for being Avalis American, he didn't quit; even when he was all banged up and bruised, he didn't quit; when he lost his shot at the eighth-grade quarterback spot because of a freak injury, he didn't quit; when he got cut from the team his freshman and sophomore years, he didn't quit; even when he was just a practice player and couldn't make the roster, he still didn't quit.

Now, he was on the sidelines as a backup, part of the team. And the whole crowd was chanting his name.

Jack's voice started to shake, his vision got blurry, but he kept shouting, "Bambi!" That was his boy!

Annie stood up too, tears streaming down her face, unable to say a word, just staring at the number eleven on the sidelines, surrounded by teammates, looking a bit lost. The deafening chants echoed, bouncing around the Rose Bowl.

"Wow, folks, something wild is going down at the Rose Bowl. Everyone's shouting a name. But it sounds kinda unfamiliar, and we have no clue what's happening."

"Listeners, the Bruins fans are all chanting the same thing. We don't know what's up yet, stay tuned for more."

"Bambi? Like the little deer? Not sure, but the Bruins fans are calling out for Bambi. What does this mean? Are they hoping Bambi can take down the Badgers? Haha, Bruins fans are something else."

The commentary booth was a mess, the commentators were lost, trying to figure out what was going on. Everyone was frantically hitting up their assistants, asking the same question: What the heck is happening at the Rose Bowl?

Except for Kirk. "Listeners, everyone in the stadium is chanting the same name, Bambi!" Kirk felt a rush of excitement, his chest swelling with emotion.

"Bambi, his name is Luke, a senior at UCLA. This kid's got a ton of stories. He started as a practice player and became the third-string quarterback at the start of the season. But in the Bruins' last game, down by three touchdowns, he came in as a sub and led the team to score four touchdowns, pulling off a crazy comeback, beating their crosstown rival, USC, for only the second time in ten years!"noveldrama

As he spoke, Kirk's eyes got a bit misty, the excitement from that game four weeks ago still fresh. "Tonight, the crowd is calling for their hero again, hoping Bambi can save the day and bring the Rose Bowl back to UCLA after twenty-five years!"

"Listeners, we're witnessing a miracle, not just a game miracle, but a Bambi miracle! This practice player-turned-Avalis American quarterback has made his mark on this field!" Kirk said passionately, caught up in the chants, remembering the last game, his blood pumping, his voice rising.

Adam turned back, surprised, looking at the excited faces in the crowd, then saw Blake's knowing smile, like he was saying, "So, you interested now?" Adam shook his head, chuckling quietly, but his eyes stayed calm and cool.

The crowd was losing it. In a crisis, they always looked for a hero, and after Luke's epic performance last game, he was their guy. But as a scout, he had to keep his cool. He figured the Bruins' coaches wouldn't make a bonehead move. Sticking with Kevin was the smart play.

But the crowd had other ideas. The "Bambi" chants got louder, and even the neutral fans joined in, leaving the Badgers' fans totally confused. They didn't know whether to laugh or boo, completely clueless about this new twist.

The chants were coming from everywhere. Luke looked up and saw a massive sea of people, all calling his name. His heartbeat synced with the chants, pounding louder and louder, making his muscles twitch with excitement, nerves, and a bit of confusion. Right now, he was on top of the world.

Not just the crowd, but the offensive players on the sidelines-Logan, John, Marcus, and the rest were sneaking glances and then shouting in unison, "Bambi!" They were loving every second of it.

Kevin, standing nearby, was in agony.

Each shout felt like a dagger, cutting deeper and deeper, heavier and heavier, leaving him no room to fight back. It was like he was standing in a frying pan, every pore screaming in pain. The chants were so thick that the air felt thin, leaving Kevin completely helpless, not even angry, just standing there, drowning in shame. Luke, damn Luke! Damn Luke!

The chants got louder, messing with the Badgers' offense and firing up the Bruins' defense. A sack, a broken pass, a rushed throw leading to an incomplete pass-it was like slicing through butter, pinning the Badgers' offense down and forcing them to punt.

There were two minutes and thirteen seconds left in the game.

In football, each team has three timeouts, plus a two-minute official timeout at the end of each half. This meant the Badgers could run down thirteen seconds, then punt after the official timeout, leaving the Bruins with the final two minutes for their offense. Sure enough, when both special teams left the field, there were exactly two minutes left. Justin, the captain of the Bruins' defense, ran off the field with a tense look, shouting to his offensive teammates, "We did our best, we did our best! It's up to you now!" Anthony turned to the crowd, placing his hands under his chubby belly, quietly fanning the crowd's chants with a proud smile, mouthing, "Bambi!" Then he turned, his eyes gleaming, looking at his teammates. Chuck and Norm both turned to look at Rick. Rick looked left, then right, but found no escape. Looking up, he saw the whole world going nuts, everyone shouting the same name, "Bambi!" Sixty thousand? Seventy thousand? A hundred thousand? All the chants converged, shaking the world, like a never-ending volcanic eruption.

Rick couldn't believe his eyes, stunned and amazed by the scene. He opened his mouth but couldn't say a word, his voice trapped in his chest, his brain momentarily frozen, unable to think, only managing to ask, "Who planned this?"

But his voice was quickly drowned in the chants, not even causing a ripple. Rick knew he wouldn't get an answer.

Rick exhaled deeply, hesitating, struggling, thinking, his gaze lingering on Kevin and Luke for a moment each. Finally, he waved to Norm and mouthed, "Bambi!"

Years later, looking back, Rick realized that in that moment, he made the most important decision of his career.

Norm smiled broadly, nodded at Rick, then turned and walked to Luke's side, giving him a heavy pat on the chest. "Buddy, you're up!"

Luke clenched his fist tightly and sprinted onto the field.

In an instant, the crowd erupted, no longer chanting "Bambi," but screaming with passion, waves of cheers crashing like a tsunami, the Rose Bowl like a lone canoe in a stormy sea, on the brink of capsizing.

Everyone was screaming, everyone was clapping, everyone was jumping. At this moment: the whole world cheered for Luke! The whole world bowed to Luke! The whole world went crazy for Luke!

Annie jumped up, raising her hands high, shouting with all her might, "Bambi, go! Bambi!" As she shouted, tears of joy streamed down her face.
