Mated 334
KESTER.
Cole went ahead to explain how they were on their way back home when Kasmine saw Claire across the road.
How she asked to go talk to her.
How he stayed behind in the goddamn car while my pregnant mate walked off on her own.
How someone came out of nowhere and fired a fucking gain
How the bullet hit Claire and Kasmine screamed.
How he finally jumped out, too late, and tackled Kasmine out of the way.
How she almost got caught in the crossfire because he was too damn dumb and careless.
I just stared at him. My head was throbbing.
Didn't I tell him to keep her safe with his life? Didn't I tell him that no matter what happened, no detours? Didn't I...
He fucked it up.
Bad.
I took a deep breath, just to keep myself from punching a hole through the wall.
Then I looked down at Kasmine.
"Baby, come," I whispered, shifting gears fast as I gently guided her to the waiting couch just to our left. She was still crying, wiping at her cheeks with trembling hands.
I could still feel the panic shaking off her in waves. She was so shaken that I could barely watch.
Thank fuck, the hallway was mostly empty. A few nurses passed by, but no one hung around.
There were no eyes watching us too closely.
She sat down gently, her lower lip quivering.
I crouched in front of her, held her face in my hands, and kissed her forehead. "Wait for me, okay?" I murmured.
She nodded, and I stood up slowly, returning my attention to Cole.
He didn't see it coming.
One second, he was standing in front of me like a sorry-ass statue, and the next, my fist slammed into his jaw with a sickening crack.
He staggered backward, blood spraying from his mouth as he crashed into the wall behind him and slid down, dazed.
"Kester!" Kasmine gasped, jumping to her feet. Her voice trembled, but it didn't stop me.
Red. All I could see was red.
I didn't hear Kasmine scream my name.
was already on him.
I straddled Cole where he lay slumped, grabbed the front of his shirt and slammed my fist into his face again. And again. And again.noveldrama
"You fucking idiot!" I snarled between each hit. "I told you...! I warned you...!"
Another punch.
"You were supposed to protect her with your life!"
His head lotted to the side, blood soaking the collar of his shirt, but didn't stop. I couldn't stop, even if I wanted to. Something inside me had snapped out of place. Content.
Because all I saw was Kasmine in the pool of her own blood, on that road, alone, without me or anyone there to save her.
All I could think was, what if she had died? What if I'd never gotten to hold her again? Never smelled her again? Never seen the baby?
A nurse had run into the hallway the moment the crash rang out. Another was yelling something from down the corridor, frozen in the doorway. While another sprinted away calling security,
My hands were slick with Cole's blood now, and still, I drove another punch into his ribs.
"Kester, stop!" Kasmine cried, grabbing my arm, but I shook her off, my teeth bared in a snarl.
She didn't understand.
He had left her unprotected.
He almost got her killed.
She could've died.
I drew my fist back again, barely feeling my own skin split from the force of my rage, until her voice cracked.
"Kester, please... stop! Please, look at me!"
She dropped to her knees beside me, her hands cupping my face with desperate tenderness, guiding my face away from Cole.
And that did it.
It snapped me. And just like that, my lungs started working again.
My fist froze in midair the moment my blazing eyes locked onto hers
Her tear-streaked face was so close and trembling, her lips parted and eyes wide with fear. She was scared of me.
Fuck, No. She shouldn't be.
And just like that...
The storm inside me died.
The blood in my ears stopped foaring. My chest stopped heaving. My fists dropped limp at my sides.
"Kasmine," I let out a broken breath.
Her warm shaky thumbs brushed
my cheekbones, "He didn't mean to... It was all my fault. I made him stop. You're hurting him, Kes. Please... come back to me." fo
I glanced down at Cole for a moment before sliding off him. He was bruised, battered, and barely conscious.
My hands shook as I reached for Kasmine, and she came into my arms without hesitation, pressing her forehead into my chest.
"I'm sorry," I rasped hoarsely, "I'm so fucking sorry, baby."
She didn't say a word. She just wrapped her arms around me and held together
every piece of my broken self.
