Chapter 625
Selena was the kind of woman who could be downright ruthless when she wanted to be. Maybe it was the intensity of his stare that finally got to her, but Selena looked up from her book and locked eyes with the man standing in front of her. Everett's eyes brimmed with emotion, but Selena didn't even flinch.
She spoke with a calm that cut deeper than any sharp words could, "The guest room's ready for you. You can stay there tonight. We'll sort everything else out tomorrow. I'm off to bed."
Her first pregnancy had been a rollercoaster, and now, expecting her second, she was determined to take better care of herself. Closing her book, she placed it on the small side table and headed towards the big bed, her demeanor as composed as if she were talking to a stranger.
Everett had braced himself for her anger, but her reaction was miles from what he'd anticipated. With a few quick strides, he reached her, gently gripping her wrist to turn her towards him.
"Selena, I'm sorry I got back so late," he said, his voice carrying the weight of his regret. He'd intended to return in three months, but things had come up, delaying him despite his efforts to cut the time short. "You don't owe me an apology," Selena replied, her voice steady and detached. "And there's no need to fill me in on your whereabouts anymore, Mr. Everett." The formal tone of those last two words drew a line in the sand between them.
Everett would've preferred an outburst, a storm of emotion. Anything but this icy calm that made him feel like a stranger. It left him scrambling for a way to fix things.
Pulling her into an embrace, he kissed her ear, his voice raw as he tried to explain. "Selena, Yasmine's surgery went well. She's staying in France and won't be around anymore, so we can..."
But Selena interrupted with a wry laugh, tilting her head to meet his gaze. "Is that so?"noveldrama
Everett was ready to reassure her, but she continued, "You really don't need to update me on your personal affairs.
"Selena." His throat tightened, frustration creasing his brow. "Everything's sorted now. Can we please just talk? Don't freeze me out like this..."
He wanted desperately to make things right, but with her wall up, it seemed impossible.
Selena slipped out of his embrace. "Alright, let's talk," she said with a resigned sigh. If he was so set on it, they'd talk.
She walked over
to the bedside
table, opened a drawer, and pulled out a divorce agreement, handing it directly to him. "Here. Take a look
You can decide what to do about the assets. It's whatever. But our son's custody is mine. I've talked
and he wants to stay with
him, I hope
you'll respect his choice."
"Of course, if you can somehow convince him to live with you, I won't stand in the way."
Everett didn't even glance at the divorce papers. He crumpled them into a tight ball, his gaze turning steely. "Is this really all you want to say to me?"
"I'm not agreeing to a divorce!" he declared. Three years ago, he wouldn't have, and now, loving her even more, he certainly wouldn't!
Selena shrugged, unfazed. "If you
won't agree, then we'll just have to go to court. I'm sure the judge will be interested in hearing about your little escapades."
"Mr. Everett's quite the hotshot now, isn't he? Lots of folks are green with envy over Bennett Corporation. And I bet the public would love to hear all about your scandalous infidelity!"
What do you think?
