Chapter 73 Emergency Contacts
The spoon was sent right up to her mouth, and Lexie subconsciously ducked back a little.
[I’ll do eat myself.]
Alan frowned and handed the bowl over.
Lexie avoided his gaze, lowering her head and taking small sips of porridge.
“Your foot is a little infected, so don’t go to work for a couple of days.”
Lexie froze for a moment, if Alan didn’t remind her, she didn’t even see that her foot, which had been almost healed from the burns, had been rewrapped with gauze this time.
They came home so late last night, she knew who wrapped it up.
[But the library has arranged for me to take on the library expansion, and I need to interface with Howard Group.]
“Let’s talk about it when you’re healed.”
[But Howard Group …]
“I’ll take care of it, you don’t have to worry about it.”
Lexie was slightly stunned and nodded.
In recent times, Alan’s attitude towards her seemed to have really changed, whether it was alerting herself to Victor’s death or arriving in time last night, she felt incredible.
He waited until Lexie finished her porridge before he went out.
“Stay home and recuperate, don’t go anywhere.”
The low voice echoed in Lexie’s ears, and looking at the empty bowl by the bed, for a moment, her heart moved and she couldn’t help but hold her wrist.
She actually woke up once last night in the middle of the night to find herself clutching the cuff of Alan’s shirt while he sat on the floor, asleep just leaning against the side of the bed.
She was still feverishly confused at that moment, thinking she was dreaming, but as soon as she let go, the person next to her bed woke up.
His large hand reached out to probe her forehead, testing the temperature, and asked, “Not feeling well?”
Lexie remembered that the last time she had been sick and watched over all night, it seemed like when she was very young and her Grandma was at her bedside, and the feeling of reassurance last night was like that time.
It was already evening.
Tina was standing on the balcony on the second floor of the villa in her pajamas when a cell phone ring came.
“Hello?”
“Miss Tina, you must help me.”
“What’s wrong?” With a can of beer still in her hand, Tina uttered.
The call was from Director Hopkins of the Engineering and Design Department.
“Because of what happened yesterday, Mr. Alan is going to fire me.”
“What? Because of what happened yesterday?”
“That’s a big deal, Miss Tina, you’ve done me a great disservice this time,” on the other end of the phone, Director Hopkins cried out, “Why didn’t you tell me earlier that Miss Mitchell was Mr. Alan’s wife?”
Tina sneered, “If I had told you earlier, would you have dared to do that?”
This bunch of inflammatory villains dared to get involved at all, if they knew Lexie’s identity.
Director Hopkins did not know what to do, but the only person he could rely on was Tina, so he had to be obedient to her, “Miss Tina, I did according to your instructions, can you help me plea for mercy…”
“You got an interview for the dismissing?”
“Not yet, but the news coming from the HR department that Mr. Howard had HR look for someone to replace me in this position already.”
Tina leaned lazily against the railing and took a sip of beer, “Don’t worry, my cousin won’t fire you recently.”
“So what’s he doing? HR …”
“Just deterring me to stop,” Tina gave a disdainful laugh, “But he will likewise make grandpa look down on him.”
“Relax, I’ll take care of this.”
Hanging up the phone, Tina drained the beer in one go, squeezing the can out of shape with one hand.
She had known Alan for so many years and had never seen him put anyone in his heart since he was a child, for he was born in the Howard family, he didn’t dare to put anyone in his heart.
A mute was just a mute, what waves could she make?
Lexie stayed at home all day and until she heard the engine downstairs in the evening, she thought it was Alan coming back, but not long after, Kevin came over with a medicine box and knocked on the door.
“No water on the wound, right?”
[No.]
“Good, one more change of medicine, and if there’s nothing wrong later, just remove the gauze and wait for the wound to heal, have more rest.”
[Thank you.]
Lexie’s injured leg rested on the stool as Kevin methodically bandaged her wound, the light inside the house was bright, hitting the top of his head and emitting a soft glow.
“What happened yesterday? Is he related again”
[No, it has nothing to do with him.]
“Just don’t defend him; I know him, he doesn’t care about anything but business, doesn’t care about anyone but himself since he was a child.”
Lexie wanted to explain for Alan, but seeing that Kevin was already determined, she did not know what to say.
As they were talking, Marry’s voice came from downstairs.Exclusive © content by N(ô)ve/l/Drama.Org.
“Mr. Alan, you are back, have you eaten?”
“Not yet.”
“Madam hasn’t eaten yet either, so I’ll have the kitchen add some dish.”
“Where’s Lexie?”
“Upstairs.”
Marry’s voice was plucked up a lot higher than usual, as if she was deliberately trying to shout at someone.
Lexie’s heart stuttered.
[Kevin, go.]
“Don’t worry, he called me to change your medication and told me to come back from work early, and besides, we are doing nothing.”
Kevin wrapped the last loop of gauze and unhurriedly packed his medicine chest.
There were footsteps from outside.
When Lexie looked to the door, Alan had already opened the door and entered, “Changing medicine?”
“Yes, I’ve already told cousin-in-law about the precautions,” Kevin carried the medicine box, “Cousin-in-law, I’ll leave first.”
Two ‘cousin-in-law’ in a row seemed to be a deliberate attempt to remind something.
Alan didn’t change his face, “Let’s eat together later.”
“Okay.”
After Kevin left, Alan closed the door. Seeing that Lexie was holding a book in her hand, he asked, “What’s the book you’re reading?”
Lexie turned the cover over to him.
It was a novel in German.
“You know German?”
[Took it as an elective in college, not very proficient.]
Alan remembered his earlier visit to Mitchell’s and saw a whole shelf of books in Lexie’s tiny bedroom, a wide array of books in all kinds of languages, some of which he couldn’t even understand.
“How much more do you have that I don’t know about?”
A low voice rang in her ears, and Lexie subconsciously clutched the corner of the page.
Alan tossed a box at Lexie’s side before taking a seat, his slender fingers tugging at his tie, “This is for you.”
Lexie froze when she saw the phone box at her side.
[For me?]
“Isn’t your phone broken?”
“Don’t turn your phone off in the future, and remember to set your emergency contact to Jack when you turn it on.”
[Why?]
“Sometimes I can’t be reached, but Jack is 24 hours on call.”
Lexie frowned, surprised, and looked at Alan, who seemed to have misunderstood.
