Chapter 34
The patient claimed that her daughter had fallen victim to me. She couldn't go to school anymore and had developed depression.
She cried as she spoke, showing everyone photos and a diagnosis report of her daughter's condition. Many people believe her.
Nora spoke while glancing eagerly at me. "Dr. Ranford, don't let the rumors get to you. This is a hospital, after all. As long as your skills are solid, nothing else matters.
"And I don't believe you're that kind of person. We've worked together for years now, and I've never once seen you-"
Before she could finish, someone else arrived. It was Elise, Dr. Crowell's secretary.
"All doctors, please head to the conference room for a meeting. Dr. Ranford, don't be late."
There was something pointed in the way she looked at me. Even without Nora's earlier explanation, I knew this was tied to the recent rumors.
Nora looked at me with concern. "Dr. Randord."
"Go ahead. I'll head to the meeting." Even knowing this was a trap, I had no choice but to attend.
Along the way, I passed several doctors, both from my department and others. Their gazes were odd, and some even avoided me as if I were the plague. I held my head high and walked straight ahead, unfazed by their stares.
"Dr. Ranford, I brought you into this hospital because you were a top student. I never imagined you'd be capable of something so vile. I'm truly disappointed!"
I had just arrived when Dr. Crowell, not even waiting for everyone to settle down, launched into criticism.
All eyes turned to me. Some were gloating while others were skeptical.
I stood and met Dr. Crowell's gaze. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You don't? Oh, I think you know plenty." He let out a cold laugh. "Dr. Huxley, go ahead."noveldrama
Samuel stood and looked at me. "I only learned about this recently. A patient came forward and said Dr. Ranford violated medical ethics.
"He not only accepted bribes, but also harassed female patients and their families, even luring patients to his home under the guise of delivering medicine and then committing indecent acts.
"I really didn't expect this from you, Dr. Ranford. I always respected you as a senior colleague. You've disgraced us all."
His words were full of righteous indignation. Around us, murmurs broke out. The way they looked at me grew even stranger.
I watched the farce unfold with cold detachment.
Seeing that I stayed silent, Dr. Crowell immediately made a decision. "We cannot tolerate someone like this in our hospital. Dr. Ranford, don't bother coming back!"
That was what he was really after, wasn't it?
I suddenly laughed. "Did you even give me a chance to speak?"
"What is there to say? The entire hospital is already in an uproar because of this. Are you trying to make things worse?" Dr. Crowell glared at me.
Samuel stood at the ready.
I gave them all a calm look. "Dr. Crowell is having an inappropriate relationship with his secretary and has also slept with three female doctors at our hospitals. Was everyone aware of that?"
The room erupted in an instant, a wave of shock and disbelief rippling through everyone present.
Dr. Crowell's face turned bright red, veins visible on his neck as he barked, "What did you just say? How dare you slander me?"
"Oh? So, you do know what slander is." I raised an eyebrow. "You accused me of unethical conduct without a shred of evidence. So, tell me where's your proof?"
"Proof? Your patient has been spreading it all over the hospital! Her daughter has depression because of it! Every patient in the hospital heard the story, too! What more proof do you need?" Dr. Crowell shouted, glaring at me.
What do you think?
