Accidentally bumping into Lucas at the obstetrician’s office weighed heavily on Deasy’s mind for three whole days. In reality, whether Lucas hung out in the ER, the cardiologist’s practice, or even the operating room shouldn’t have been an issue for Deasy at all.
However, what really irked Deasy was that instead of accompanying her, a clearly pregnant woman, Lucas was escorting another lady. Who is it that’s carrying Lucas’s child, anyway? Deasy or Devina? Or could it be that Devina has also invested in her fiancé’s womb all this time?
Beyond that, whether intentional or not, Lucas’s warm and attentive attitude toward Devina infuriated Deasy.© 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
Yes, Deasy knew that Lucas had always been a gentle and caring man. His acts of service were exceptional, to say the least. But that didn’t mean he had to be that way with every woman. Deasy thought that such special treatment should be reserved for her alone, but that wasn’t the case.
Before Deasy’s very eyes, Lucas seemed intentionally neglectful. As if he didn’t see her standing right in front of him, Lucas simply walked away without a word. He didn’t even bother with a casual greeting. He didn’t even give her a passing glance. Damn!
For heaven’s sake, because of this incident, Deasy was feeling restless. She had no appetite and kept sulking every night.
Up to this moment, Deasy was still curious. Why was Lucas bothering to accompany Devina to the obstetrician’s office of all places?
“How long are you going to daydream like that, Des?”
Diana called out to her.
At the moment, Deasy was at her mother’s house. In fact, she had decided to stay there for the past two nights.
After dinner, Deasy didn’t immediately go to her room. Instead, she chose to sit on the balcony, gazing at the starry sky. Yes, she was also thinking about Lucas.
“Des isn’t daydreaming, Mom.”
“Then what do you call it? Zoning out? I’ve been calling you for a while, but you didn’t respond.”
Deasy turned to look, her eyebrows furrowed.
“Seriously, Mom? You’ve been calling me?”
“Yes. I’ve been calling your name over and over. But you were lost in thought. What are you thinking about anyway? Is it Lucas?”
Deasy smiled wryly. It was easy to read her expression. It was as if her mother knew she was thinking about her ex-boyfriend. Wait, was Lucas even considered an ex? After all, the handsome man didn’t want to reconcile with Deasy.
“Yes, Mom. Deasy is indeed thinking about Lucas. Wondering why her love life has been this way. It feels like it’s never worked out.”
Diana laughed. Even though her daughter wasn’t joking. Instead of offering support, why did it seem like she was being teased?
“It’s fate, Des. Well, it’s okay. Don’t be sad.”
“But, Mom, I’m also annoyed.”
Diana suddenly looked puzzled, her brows furrowing. Why was her daughter upset again?
“Annoyed about what?”
“The other day, Deasy ran into Lucas at the obstetrician’s office. Instead of taking me, who’s clearly pregnant, he brought another woman.”
“Another woman?”
Deasy nodded.
“Well, it’s not exactly another woman. This is the woman he’s been engaged to from the start. But it still bothers Deasy, Mom. Back then when we crossed paths, Lucas acted like he didn’t even know me.”
Once again, Diana laughed. For some reason, Deasy was feeling sad and irritated. But once more, this middle-aged woman laughed at her daughter’s fate.
“Well, what can you do, Des? Right now, you don’t have any relationship with Lucas. Maybe he’s just not meant for you. No matter what you do, even if you block or confine Lucas in a room, if it’s not meant to be, it won’t work out. Besides, you said Lucas doesn’t want to get back together, right?”
Deasy nodded again.
“I’m so sad, Mom. Just when I started to care so much, I ended up with all these problems. And now, what’s going to happen to this child? I’m pregnant, Mom, but there’s no husband in sight.”
Diana maintained a smile on her lips. She reached out her hand and gently rubbed Deasy’s bulging belly.
“Well, it’s okay if Lucas doesn’t want to marry you. After all, he’s still financially responsible, right? Besides, whether there’s a husband or not, I’m confident you can raise your child well. Mama will always be here to help. You don’t need to pay any attention to what people outside say. They may make comments or criticize, but they’re not the ones feeding you.”
Deasy nodded. She was fortunate that her mother didn’t judge her current situation. Even though she had made a huge mistake, Diana still embraced her and tried to be there for Deasy.
“Alright, instead of getting stressed and overwhelmed, focus on your pregnancy. Don’t worry about anything else.”
“Yes, I know, Mom. Even though it hurts, Deasy will try to move on as soon as possible.”
Diana nodded again.
“Regardless of what happens, Mama will always be there to help and support you.”
Deasy smiled with gratitude. She approached her mother and gave her a tight hug. No, she wouldn’t cry this time. She had promised not to shed tears and drown in sorrow.
Even if Lucas eventually decided not to be with her, Deasy would learn to accept it gracefully. As her mother had said, instead of constantly being upset over something pointless, she should focus on raising her future child.
“Oh, by the way, Mama wants to show you something,” Diana said as she released the hug.
“What is it?”
Diana didn’t answer immediately. She got up from her seat and walked into the room. It wasn’t clear what she was retrieving, but she returned a few minutes later. She then approached Deasy and handed her a brown folder.
“I think you need to read and know about this.”
Deasy didn’t say anything. She accepted the folder her mother handed her. Moments later, she began to examine the papers inside, one by one.
“Is this bank statements and evidence of money transfers?”
Diana nodded.
“Yes, Des. Those are bank statements from the past few years. Pay attention to the amounts and the sender.”
Deasy squinted her eyes to read the name of the sender on the documents. While reading, she wondered who was the person consistently sending money to her family’s account every month, with substantial amounts.
“Rangga Prayoga?” Deasy asked, looking bewildered. “Who is Rangga Prayoga, Mom?”
“Rangga Prayoga is Andreas Morales’s personal assistant, Des.”
Deasy was immediately taken aback. She was shocked and had questions swirling in her mind upon hearing her mother’s words.
“Wait a minute, Mom. What does this mean? Why has Andreas Morales’s assistant been sending money to Papa’s company account every month for several years?”
Diana sighed heavily. She knew that after she explained, it would make her daughter uncomfortable. That’s why, to ease the discomfort, Diana once again reached for Deasy’s wrist, held it firmly, and continued the conversation.
“So, after your father passed away, it turns out that Andreas Morales has been regularly sending us financial support in a substantial amount.”
“But why, Mom? Is it a bribe? Or is it compensation for causing Papa’s death?”
“Des…” Diana interjected. “Listen to Mama until the end. Until now, we thought that the money your father’s secretary sent every month was either leftover income or the result of selling some valuable assets. I never suspected anything. I thought it was your father’s legacy to help us continue our lives. But, as it turns out, I was wrong, Des. And you should know that Andreas Morales was the one who helped your father’s company secure a big investor. He convinced the clients and even gave assurances that investing in your late father’s company would be successful. So, in a way, our family business was revived thanks to Andreas Morales.”
While listening to her mother’s story, Deasy shook her head repeatedly. It seemed like she couldn’t believe what she had just heard.
“That can’t be true, Mom. It’s probably a lie. How do you even know this?”
Diana then reached for the folder she had handed over earlier, took out a few papers from the back, and pointed them out to Deasy.
“You read it,” Diana said, pointing her index finger directly at the paper. “This is a copy of your father’s company’s business agreement. Judging by the date, it’s clear that this agreement was made several months after your father’s passing. And what’s more important, it states that Andreas Morales is the guarantor for the tender. There’s an additional note that he’s ready to compensate if the partnership fails or incurs losses.”
Before Deasy could fully recover from the earlier shock, she was once again struck by the reality. Diana continued to explain at length. From this, she finally learned that her late father had been a close friend of Andreas himself. Moreover, Deasy discovered that her father had made a grave mistake in the past, causing a rift between him and Andreas.
“It can’t be, Mom. Dad couldn’t have been that dishonest,” Deasy tried to deny what she had just heard. “I can’t believe that my late father was cheating. Maybe this is just Andreas’s scheme to twist the facts. Besides, if it were true, why did you only find out about the real story now?”
Diana took a deep breath, unsure of how to explain further.
“Mama was in the same position as you, Des. I only knew that they were rivals and often clashed. I never even suspected that your father and Andreas used to be close friends.”
“So, how did Mama find out about all of this?”
“From someone who knows all about this situation. Moreover, in the folder you’re holding, there’s all the evidence that it was indeed your father who was at fault.”
Deasy reopened the folder in her hands, took out the remaining papers, and read them repeatedly.
“Oh my goodness, Mom. So, all this time, I’ve been seeking revenge on the wrong person? And Andreas has been supporting our living expenses for years. Instead of being grateful, I almost destroyed his company, Mom.”
Diana was equally perplexed. She had warned Deasy from the beginning not to seek revenge or go beyond boundaries, even if they were mistreated or treated unfairly by others.
“But you did return the money to his company, right?”
Deasy nodded.
“It’s also fortunate that I didn’t end up in jail. If Mr. Andreas wanted, he could have taken this case to the authorities.”
“Well, now you should apologize formally. We both seriously misunderstood the situation.”
“But the problem is, will Mr. Andreas even meet with me? He might still be angry and refuse to see the face of someone who nearly bankrupted his company. Besides, he’s trying to get his daughter married and leave the company.”
Diana sighed. Deasy was giving up before even trying.
“Who knows, Des, until you try. Just apologize tomorrow. Whether he forgives you or not is a matter for later. The important thing is your intention is good. Who knows, after apologizing, Mr. Andreas might soften his heart and allow you to marry Lucas.”
Deasy sighed in frustration. But when she thought about it, she had indeed made a grave mistake and should formally apologize. Because of this, she resolved to visit Andreas Morales in person tomorrow and apologize for what she had done.
