I looked up to meet Eric's gaze with a smug smile.

"Of course, I know I can handle things on my own. But still, thanks for the help. Otherwise, I might've collapsed from exhaustion."

Eric picked up a piece of food and placed it on my plate. In a slightly regretful tone, he said, "It's just a shame that we haven't caught the real mastermind yet."

A sudden thought flashed in my mind. I looked at Eric cautiously. "What do you think about me learning some self-defense?"

"No!" Eric cut me off immediately, his tone firm and uncompromising.

I froze, staring at him in surprise. Before I could even process his words, I let it

slip and asked without thinking, "Can you even fight?"

I could swear that it wasn't meant as an insult. I was genuinely asking.
