Chapter 787
Chapter 787:
“That’s because they fear you,” Allison said, her voice steady despite the tremble in her eyelashes, a mix of fear and defiance. “I was scared, too. But I’ve realized you’re just as human as anyone else. As a human being, you can’t always be right. You’ll inevitably make mistakes.”
Her words quickened Verruckt’s pulse. Did she truly see him as human?
On Fleeingland, he had been labeled a monster, with his own men keeping their distance from the so-called madman. But Alice, despite her timidity and evident fear, still dared to lock eyes with him and assert, “You’re human, with human emotions.”
Verruckt felt a peculiar shift within himself. Accustomed to command, he usually wouldn’t allow anyone’s words to unsettle him.
“I don’t care about right or wrong, only the outcome,” he declared, his expression as cold and calculating as a wolf poised to pounce.
For some inexplicable reason, her vulnerable look only intensified his desire to torment her further. Even though he was the one who had been slapped, it was Alice who was in tears — a fact that only exacerbated his annoyance.
Verruckt licked his lips and continued nonchalantly, “Maybe I’ll tear out your heart and keep it with me forever.”
Sure enough, he saw Alice pale at his chilling words. Despite the tremble in her fingers, she stood her ground.
“I have no power to stop you,” Allison said, her voice steady as she provoked him. “But if you force me, you’ll only have a corpse, not my heart.” Such psychological games always worked.
Verruckt, malicious just seconds before, suddenly turned icy.
“Shut up,” he hissed, his voice hoarse.
His mood soured instantly at the sound of his own words. Their eyes locked, his gaze piercing like a sword, slicing through the air to gauge her sincerity. She looked like she was on a cliff’s edge, poised to jump. He didn’t want to witness that.
The thought of Alice dying before him shook Verruckt momentarily.
“Alice, you’re thinking too much. Tonight is merely a performance,” he sneered, pushing down the turmoil inside him. “I should have briefed you beforehand. That oversight won’t cost you for that slap. But repeat it, and you might not like the consequences.”
He shifted his attention back to the driver, feigning indifference.
“How long until we hit the White Stallion Club?”
“Five minutes,” the driver answered.noveldrama
As they moved away, neon lights streaked past, blurring into the night. Time seemed to stretch on forever, yet eventually, the tension in the car thinned and faded away. Allison recognized that Verruckt was subtly offering her an out.
So she acted as if nothing had happened and asked, “Do I still need to handle tonight’s task? Mrs. Blake wasn’t at the Immortality Group’s banquet hall.”
