Chapter 57 A Bowl of Soup That Could Kill You

The sound of shattering glass rang out in the quiet dining room.

Caroline froze, still holding the spoon in her hand, while shards of the bowl and spilled bird's nest soup- lay scattered on the floor.

The moment she heard it was from the Brooks family, there was no way she could eat it!

A chill ran down her spine. She felt both shocked and fortunate that she hadn't taken a bite and had only brought the soup close to her lips.

Her heart was still pounding. She had almost eaten it, but thankfully, Paul's words stopped her just in time.

Whether or not there was anything wrong with the soup, Caroline vowed never to touch anything sent by the Brooks family again.

Caroline gently touched her stomach, watching as the maids cleared the mess. Her nerves slowly calmed.

There had to be another explanation for her behavior.

"I just don't want to owe the Brooks family anything, not even a bowl of soup," Caroline said, her voice steady. "After marrying you, I've severed all ties with them. I don't want their kindness or any further connections. To ensure her words sounded convincing, she added, "They raised me for twenty years and got five billion dollars in return. That's more than enough for them."

David studied her intently for a few seconds before finally looking away.

Caroline's shoulders relaxed as the tension left her body.
