Chapter 207
Kris couldn't take his eyes off Alex, mesmerized by every giggle, every smile. His heart swelled as he played with his son, savoring the simple joy of pushing toy cars back and forth.
For hours, they sat there, Kris losing himself in the world of his child. He cherished each small moment as Alex's childish laughter rang out, bright and innocent. It made him forget, even if briefly, the storm raging inside him.
Betty's voice broke the peaceful bubble. "Time for dinner," she said softly, her tone almost apologetic for interrupting the moment.
Kris looked up, blinking as reality returned. "Good," he said, standing up with Alex in his arms. "I want to feed him."
Betty raised a brow. "Have you done this before?"
Kris smiled, the sadness behind his eyes briefly masked. "I have a daughter... she's only two months younger than Alex. I used to feed her all the time."
Betty's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "I didn't know that."
"It's a long story."
"Well, Alex usually likes to eat by himself." Betty laughed gently. "He's convinced he's a grown man already."
Kris chuckled along with her. "He already is, isn't he?" His voice dropped as he ran a hand through Alex's soft hair, feeling a pang in his chest at how much he'd missed.
They moved to the dining table, where Thalassa was absent. Betty strapped Alex into his toddler booster seat.
"I'll go get Thalassa." She said, but just as she was about to leave, she paused. "Ah, there she is."
Kris stiffened as he looked up to find Thalassa approaching the table. Their eyes met for a moment before Kris quickly looked away, focusing instead on Alex.
Thalassa took the seat opposite Alex, and Betty took the head chair. Betty served a dinner of roast chicken with small, chopped pieces for Alex, who gleefully dug into his meal, oblivious to the thick tension around him.
Dinner was an awkward affair. The table was filled with tensed silence as Thalassa and Kris did their best to avoid glancing at each other.
The only sounds that broke the silence were Alex's giggles and the clumsy clatter of his fork as he made a mess of his plate. Kris found himself smiling at the boy's antics, but it was a bittersweet smile.
When dinner was over, Betty stood and started gathering the plates. "Kris, would you mind helping me clear the table?"
Kris nodded. Getting up, he grabbed his and Alex's dishes and followed her into the kitchen. As he set the plates down, he turned to leave, but Betty stopped him with a firm hand on his arm.
"Are you really going to keep being upset with Thalassa?" she asked, her voice soft but insistent.
Kris tensed. "I'd rather not talk about it, Betty."
But Betty wasn't having it. "No, we
are going to talk about it. I overheard
your conversation earlier in the bathroom. Yes, I eavesdropped a little, but that's beside the point. Her eyes softened as she looked at him. "You called her a bad mother, Kris."
"I never said that," Kris retorted back, his frown deepening.
"Yes, you did not say it directly, but you implied it when you said she left her son in New York just to get revenge on you and your family. That must have hurt her, Kris. More than you realize."
Kris sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair. "I didn't mean it like that."
"I'm sure you didn't," Betty said, “but it still hurt her. You don't know what Thalassa went through to give birth to Alex. There were so many complications during the pregnancy and childbirth, Kris. It wasn't easy for
her, but she still fought to brifor
him into this world. You're upset, and I get that, but have you trie to put
yourself in her shoes to see why she
might've kept Alex from you?"
Kris fell silent. Betty watched him for a moment before she nodded. "I'm going to get a guest room readynoveldrama
for you. I assume you're staying the night."
Kris nodded numbly. "Yes. Thank you."
Leaving was the last thing on his mind. Not when he still had so much to catch up on with Alex.
Betty smiled softly. "I'll take care of it." She left him alone in the kitchen, giving him the space to think.
Kris pulled out his phone. If he was going to be here for a while, he was going to need some clothes, but he hadn't brought any with him.
He hadn't checked his phone while playing with his son, and the phone had been set to 'Do Not Disturb' all this while.
Turning it off, he winced at the flood
of missed calls, voicemails, and message notifications. After
checking a few of the messages, he opened his voicemail app, scrolling through voicemails from his siblings, Alden, investors, employees, and business partners.
But one message stood out from the rest. A voicemail from Thalassa. The timestamp showed that she'd sent it to him the previous night.
Frowning, he pressed play. Her voice filled his ears, quiet and tense.
'Kris... please call me when you get this. There's something I need to tell you."
He swallowed hard, his throat tightening. Thalassa had said she planned to tell him the truth about Alex,
but he hadn't believed her in the moment.
Was she really going to tell him? Was that why she'd sent this voicemail?
What do you think?
