Chapter 558 Tom's Acting Skills
Emily kept her cool, but inside, she was done with Tom's fake charm. She smiled, all the while figuring out how to get Tom to leave without being rude.
The best way was to act like she didn't get what he was saying and play along with his charade.
"But you should remember what Sophia looks like better, since you held her when she was little."noveldrama
"When Evelyn joined our family, I was already away at boarding school. It's understandable you didn't see me often, but remembering my face must be quite a challenge for you."
Tom, not completely clueless, picked up on the undertone of Emily's words.
There was sarcasm and a hint of something more. Tom's heart tightened, but he quickly plastered on a smile and eagerly agreed.
"Yeah, but I still think about you often. You were always such a sensible kid. I really liked you."
A barely noticeable hint of mockery flashed in Emily's eyes. Liked her money, more likely?
If he truly cared, why didn't he show up when she needed help the most? Instead, he was here now, pretending to be family.
Emily sneered inwardly, but her face remained gentle as she softly replied.
"Your concern is something I hold dear."
She then shifted the conversation.
"What have you been busy with lately, Uncle Tom?"
Tom hesitated for a moment before smiling. "Just the usual work."
Tom couldn't possibly admit he spent his days fighting with Hayden over shares, nor could he reveal his gambling habits. So, he lied.
Emily wouldn't know the specifics of his activities, so a few vague words would be enough.
But Emily's eyes flashed with sharpness; she had already seen through Tom's facade.
His so-called busyness was nothing but idleness, borrowing money everywhere, waiting for Evelyn to clean up his mess, or trying to curry favor with the wealthy for some benefits.
Emily continued calmly. "Uncle Tom, you're so humble despite being so busy. You must have made quite a bit of money over the years. Evelyn must be thrilled; she always hoped you'd live well!"
In reality, Emily was making things up.
She had no idea about Evelyn and Tom's relationship, but it likely wasn't great.
Otherwise, why wouldn't Tom know that Evelyn's imprisonment was her doing?
If he knew, he wouldn't shamelessly come here looking for trouble.
If Evelyn found out, her reaction would be interesting.
Meanwhile, Emily deliberately brought up money, which indeed piqued Tom's interest.
He decided not to complain, instead started boasting about his recent successful investments, as if he were a business tycoon.
But now, he was facing some "troubles."
"Emily, I'm having some cash flow issues. Could you help me out?" Tom tentatively asked, his eyes flickering.
Emily smiled slightly and interrupted.
"Don't worry, Uncle Tom. My family may not be wealthy, but we won't let you struggle. It's just a cash flow issue, right?"
She looked directly at Tom, her gaze sharp, causing him to momentarily freeze and feel uneasy.
Tom forced a smile and quickly nodded in agreement. "Exactly."
Emily stayed calm, gently stroking her coffee cup, as if she had everything under control.
The living room was filled with the aroma of coffee, but it couldn't mask the subtle tension between them.
Tom took a deep breath and cautiously asked. "Emily, could you lend me some money for the cash flow?"
Emily raised an eyebrow, her tone still unhurried. "Lending money isn't impossible." After a pause, Emily continued. "Uncle Tom, if you're truly in trouble, I'll do my best to help. But everything needs to be done properly to avoid future issues."
"How about I draft a promissory note, and then we can discuss the details?"
"We may be family, but it's better to handle things formally."
Tom couldn't believe that the Emily he once underestimated was now speaking such formalities. She truly embodied the Smith family's business acumen!
Wasn't she supposed to be the soft-hearted, easy-going one?
Now it seemed she was quite difficult to deceive!
Unbeknownst to him, cold sweat had started to form on Tom's forehead.
Emily noticed the sweat on Tom's forehead but remained composed.
"Uncle Tom, there's no rush. Think it over before responding."
Though her tone was calm, it exerted an invisible pressure.
Just as Tom was at a loss for words, Andrew arrived with a group of men.
They walked straight to Emily, Andrew nodded politely, then turned his gaze to Tom. Tom was completely intimidated by the scene. The group of strong, expressionless men stared at him, creating an unprecedented sense of oppression!

Tom's voice revealed his panic. He tried to stand up but was compelled to sit back down under the men's gaze.
Emily remained unperturbed, simply waving her hand.
The men silently retreated, leaving an awkward silence.
"Uncle Tom, why are you scared? I just want to clarify things. I'll lend you any amount
you need, but you know, I don't have much money. It's all Michael's."
"As people say, I live off him, like a kept woman."
"So, to lend you this money, we need to follow procedures. You'll leave a loan document, and they'll take you to get the money. Then they'll accompany you home to familiarize themselves with your place. In the future, if you're late with payments, they'll come knocking."
Emily deliberately dragged out her words, causing Tom's cold sweat to pour out like spring rain. His heart pounded, feeling like it would leap out of his chest.
He forced himself to stay calm, his dry throat squeezing out a few words. "There's no need for that."
Emily just smiled, not responding, as if implying, 'Uncle Tom, I can't make this decision. You need to ask my husband.'
Tom grew increasingly uneasy, unaware that Emily and Michael had divorced. He had only heard rumors of their marital issues, but seeing Emily's demeanor, she didn't seem divorced.
Looking at the men, each expressionless, like cold statues.
Tom shivered internally, thinking.
'If I borrow this money, I'll have to repay it?'
'Money that needs to be repaid isn't worth borrowing!'
What do you think?
