The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 322

Her eyes widened in shock, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she fixed Charles with a furious glare.

"You..."

She wanted to lash out, call him something worse than a beast. But just as she started to speak, she ran out of breath.

"Mom!"

Evelyn cried out in a panic, "Doctor, please check on my mom!" She quickly caught Andrew's attention, who had just turned to enter the emergency room.

Andrew immediately turned back, his expression shifting. Josephine, who had just come out of the emergency room, was rushed back in.

As the doors swung shut in front of her, Evelyn whipped around to face Charles, her gaze fierce as she spat out, "Leave!"

Charles realized something was seriously wrong.

Instead of insisting on staying, he simply said, "Call me anytime if you need anything." Then he left.

Evelyn didn't reply, just kept staring at him with a mix of coldness and hatred. Only when he was out of sight did she let herself relax a bit.

Brooks wrapped an arm around Evelyn's shoulders, gently comforting her.

"This is all my fault!"

Evelyn's eyes were full of guilt as she stared at the red light flashing again.

"Don't say that. You were just worried about your mom and focused on her, not Charles. Plus, we all thought she didn't know who Charles was."

They had all overlooked that detail.

Both she and Brooks had assumed her mom only knew about Charles from Evelyn's stories—how he was indirectly responsible for Charlie's death and protected Dahlia, who had caused it. Josephine only knew their names, not their faces.

Despite Brooks' attempt to console her, Evelyn didn't feel any better.

She hadn't considered that her mom would dig up information on Charles and Dahlia herself.

Until the emergency room doors opened again.

Josephine was wheeled out, safe, and Evelyn couldn't hold back her tears as she gripped Josephine's hand tightly, "Mom..."

Her mother was all she had left. Growing up in an orphanage, she had always longed for a mother's love. She couldn't bear to lose it.

"Eve, don't cry. It's my fault. I lost my cool and made you worry."

Josephine's face was filled with regret.

She thought she could keep it together. But the sudden encounter caught her off guard, and she lost control.

Evelyn shook her head, quickly wiping away her tears, and smiled at Josephine.

Josephine was moved back to her room.

Brooks accompanied Evelyn to Andrew's office.

Andrew informed them that with the sudden worsening of her condition, the surgery couldn't be delayed any longer. It needed to be scheduled ASAP. He planned the surgery for three days later.

"Dr. Nelson, what are the chances of my mom's surgery being successful?"

Hearing about the surgery brought thoughts of Charlie to Evelyn's mind, making her feel anxious.

"Ms. Evelyn, I promise to do my best."

Andrew couldn't give a precisenoveldrama

"Thank you, Dr. Nelson."

Evelyn realized she had been too hasty, asking questions without thinking.

"Let's talk more about it tomorrow morning."

"Alright."

Brooks held Evelyn's hand as they left the office.

He stayed with her until she calmed down, then accompanied her back to the hospital room. Josephine's condition had stabilized by then. It was already late.

"Eve, it's really late. Let Brooks take you home to get some rest."

"Mom, I'll stay with you tonight."

She couldn't relax otherwise.

"Come on, sweetie, go home and get some rest."
