Chapter 40: Mary
“And when will you tell the kingdom that their new Queen is a human?” Ash stated loudly a large sinister smile on his face.
My heart pounded in my chest. This is it. This is the moment the kingdom revolts against Nikolai. This is the moment that everyone I love dies. This love I found with Nikolai, it’s too good to be true. Everything and anything I care about eventually dies. My parents, my baby sister, my best friend Karina from the village. And now Nikolai, Nevaeh, Draq, Dru, and Kade where all going to die. And there would be nothing I could do to save them.
“And why should the kingdom care that Mary is human?” Prince Ambrose asks, standing up for his seat up front and staring out at the crowd, “We should all be living in harmony together.”
Loud cheers of agreement erupt throughout the first and second rows, even some of the smaller supernaturals in the middle row are cheering in agreement. Looking further back I notice the wolves and the witches are glaring daggers at the faerie prince. The trolls who sit a row ahead of them seem like they could care less one way or another. My heart was overwhelmed that the majority of species in the audience didn’t care that I was a human. They only wanted to support their king and his new mate. It was in that moment that I realized that how great of a ruler Nikolai must be if he was able to bring peace amongst so many in his kingdom.
Nikolai’s words interrupt my thoughts, “Mary, may be human, but humans are one of the strongest species I have had the pleasure of meeting. Humans; they love fiercely and unconditionally, they let themselves feel every emotion and they wear their hearts on their sleeve. They’re loyal, they’re passionate, and they’re strong. The humans are a force to be reckoned with because they’re united as one. Mary, my human mate, brings the strength of the humans to the kingdom.”
My heart fluttered in my chest, seriously could I have gotten any luckier than having Nikolai as my mate? His words touched my soul, I didn’t know he thought so highly of humans. What had changed his mind, was it being around me? I knew that Nikolai treated the humans in the castle, better than
the humans were treated outside of it, but he still kept blood slaves and he still allowed those in the castle to use them for their quench their appetites, both that of hunger and sexual pleasure. Maybe, just maybe, this was the start of a change.
“Now if there are no more interruptions, I looked like to finish this ceremony and make my Queen my mate, then I’d like to go back to the castle and worship her in every way.” Nikolai states, turning his head and giving me as wink.
My face flushes red, he did not just say that.. Did he? The whispers and laughters throughout the aisles prove that he did just say what I thought he did. There were jealous whispers from the single females about them wishing Nikolai would worship their bodies, there were whispers from the elders about young love and freshly mated mates, there were a few whispers of disagreement, but the majority were excited for us.
The ceremonious music started again. I felt my nerves start to heighten once more. I was scared about
becoming a Queen. What if I failed our nation, what if I wasn’t up to par? What if I was the weak little human, that the wolves thought I was? For a moment, I considered fleeing, leaving Nikolai by himself to rule over the kingdom, but the moment I thought it, my heart felt like it was going to break. I couldn’t imagine living life without Nikolai. He had become so much to me in such a short amount of time. And my kind, they needed me. They needed me to become Queen and to change the laws. They needed me to pave the way to their freedom.
The head elder stood up from where he was sitting and joined Nikolai and I at the alter.
“Today we crown a new Queen and we unite two mates as one. King Nikolai, Your hand please.”
Nikolai raised his hand and placed it into that of the High Elder’s. The elder grabbed a knife from the podium and made a quick slash on Nikolai’s wrist before raising his hand over the golden chalice and spilling Nikolai’s blood into it. I scrunched my nose at how barbaric the entire thing seemed.
“Lady Mary, I’ll need your hand as well.” The elder stated reaching out to me after he let go of Nikolai’s hand that had already begun to heal.
“Uhh..” I replied hesitantly looking at the knife.

Nikolai smiled reassuring me that it would be okay. I quickly placed my hand in the Elder’s, knowing that if I waited a moment longer I would back out of the entire thing. The elder made a quick slash on the palm of my hand, causing me to let out a slight hiss. Nikolai grimaced at my pain, and I could tell he wanted nothing more than to rush forward and heal my wound. I smiled up at him to let him know I was okay as the elder squeezed my hand into chalice. Letting go of my hand, the elder then swirled the chalice, mixing my blood with Nikolai’s.
“Our king and our Queen’s blood united as one will bring strength, wisdom, and prosperity to the kingdom.” The elder shouted while raising the chalice above his head,” Solus nati sumus. sed donum nobis datum est invenire alteram partem animae nostrae postea in vita. Hodie celebramus coniunctionem duarum animarum in unum.” Alone we are born, but later in life we are given the gift of finding the other half of our soul. Today we celebrate the joining of two souls into one.
The elder grabbed the chalice and splashed it towards where Nikolai and I stood. I flinched, expecting the blood to splatter us, but to my amazement, the blood swirled around us. It was odd because while I had witnessed the elder mixing the blood together you could now tell that the blood had come from two individuals. I tried to recall the times I had seen Nikolai’s blood, trying to determine if it had been different
than mine, but every time I pictured it, it was the same dark red color. One swirl of blood was a deep red color with flickers of tungsten appearing throughout it. I could tell that this was Nikolai’s blood. Tungsten was a strong durable metal, much like the Vampire King himself. His blood was the mirror image of him. The other swirl of blood confused me, if Nikolai’s blood mirrored his portrayal shouldn’t mine do the same? Instead of being a normal blood red, this swirl of blood was dark red in color, but it had swirls of white blue intertwined with it.
I was so concentrated on our blood that I didn’t hear the murmurs coming from the guest. I glanced up at Nikolai to see if the swirling of blood was normal and something I should expect but he seemed distracted by the swirls of blood as well. I looked out towards the audience and noticed they all had the same perplexed look on their faces, that I had. I waited anxiously for someone to shout out that I —:1. the same perplexed look on their faces, that I had. I waited anxiously for someone to shout out that I failed the test and that I couldn’t become queen, but no sound was made. It was eerily quiet after the initial moments of shock passed through the crowd.
Finally the swirls slowed and Nikolai’s blood gravitated towards me, landing on my skin, while my blood landed on Nikolai. I watched in awe as his blood slowly soaked into my skin, my body devouring it, like it was something I needed to survive. I felt as his blood entered into my blood stream, my body felt stronger, every ounce of pain I felt leaving, all I felt was pure bliss. I held in a moan of pleasure, Nikolai on the other hand didn’t have as much strength. I heard him let out a small groan and when I looked up at him, his eyes were glowing a blood red and his fangs had elongated, his vampire ready for a taste of his mate. I smiled at him, feeling myself become wet with anticipation. I knew Nikolai’s vampire side loved me as much as human side, and that he would never do anything to hurt me, even in this state.
“Long live the King, Long live the King.” The crowd shouted, standing up and clapping their hands in celebration.
Nikolai strode towards me grabbing me around the waist, and tossing me over his shoulder causing me to shriek in delight, “Nikolai put me down.” I laughed beating my fist against his back. He smacked my ass in retaliation.
Nikolai zipped through the crowd stopping only when he came face to face with Alpha Ash. “Threaten what is mine again and I will kill you.” He growled out.
“Now King Nikolai, is that anyway to talk to the head of the werewolf council? What would the other council heads think?”
Nikolai growled out but didn’t say anything in response. NôvelDrama.Org © content.
“And what will the council say when they hear that the King has been hiding a Phoenix underneath their very eyes?” Alpha Ash replied to Nikolai’s silence, a sinister smile on his face as he watched Nikolai’s anger heighten.
