Chapter 602
The waiter brought out a new dish. Noticing that Amelia hadn't been eating much, Xyla said gently, "Ms. Joyce, you should try this, it's their signature dish. It's pretty good."
"She doesn't like the taste of cilantro."
The moment Vince said that, the entire table fell silent. All eyes turned to him.
Sure enough, the dish was garnished with finely chopped cilantro.
Xyla blinked, momentarily caught off guard. Her gaze flickered to Vince as if trying to process her confusion. "Vince, you sure know a lot about Ms. Joyce's preferences."
She kept her tone as light and natural as possible, even adding a touch of playfulness. But deep down, a tension settled in her chest.
Did he know her eating habits that well?
Hadn't Amelia said they weren't that close?
A nagging feeling crept into Xyla's mind like she was missing something important. And the more she thought about it, the stronger her unease grew.
Vince had spoken without thinking. The moment the words left his mouth, he felt the shift in the atmosphere.
He quickly composed himself, his voice calm as he answered Xyla's question. "I had dinner with Mr. Joyce once. He mentioned that he didn't like cilantro, and he happened to say his daughter didn't either. I just remembered."
Amelia's gaze landed on him, her lips curling into a smile, but there was no warmth in her eyes. "Mr. Lane sure has a great memory."
Vince met her stare but said nothing.
In the end, Jamie stepped in, smoothly redirecting the conversation back to casual chatter as everyone continued eating.
Once they had all more or less finished, Jamie stood up. "I'm gonna head to the restroom."
Jamie had barely been gone a moment when Vince also got up and left.
After washing his hands, he stepped out of the restroom and took only two steps when a voice called from behind. "Vince."
He turned around. "Jamie? What's up? I've noticed you haven't been in the best mood lately. Let's talk when we have time at home."
Jamie forced a small smile, but it was clear she wasn't really happy.
Vince reached out, gently pinching her cheek. "Why are you pretending to be fine in front of me?"
Jamie froze for a second before letting her smile fade. Instead of answering, she asked, "Have you thought through your engagement with Ms. Zimmerman? You don't have to-"
She stopped abruptly. Someone was approaching.
Xyla walked up with a bright, effortless smile, though she let out a barely perceptible breath-just in time.
"I saw you both step out and take a
while to come back, so I came to find you, Ms. Hart got a phone call earlier, and she said she had, something to take care of, so she and Ms. Joyce left first."
"They already left?" Jamie was surprised.
"Yeah, they asked me to let you know. They said we should grab a meal together another time."
Jamie nodded. "No worries. We were just about done eating anyway."
She and Soren said their goodbyes to Vince and Xyla before heading out. Soren offered to drive her back to the office.
As they neared her destination, he suddenly spoke. "Jamie."
"Hm?" Her voice was soft and calm.
"Ever since we met up again back home, you've been distant with me."
Soren glanced at her. "Is it because
all this talk about marriage is making you feel pressured? You know, getting married or not doesn't
change anything between us,
us, right?
Whatever you want to do, I'll support you."
Jamie looked at him, pressing her lips together in silence.
Their eyes met, lingering for a moment.noveldrama
Then, after a brief pause, Soren tapped his fingers against the steering wheel and let out a chuckle. "Or... is it because, during the time we were apart, you fell for someone else?"
Jamie's back stiffened slightly, and their gazes locked in midair.
What do you think?
