Chapter 3
I have only my work left, and it’s in my work that I can see my own worth.
If I can’t even protect my own work, then I’m truly useless.
I arrived at Noel’s company and stormed into
his office.
I bumped into Lydia at the door.
She was petite, in a white dress, her skin flawless, smiling sweetly as she linked her arm with mine.
“Sis, are you here to bring me the design? I heard from Noel that you’ve given up your

competition slot. You’re so kind to me.”
“Get away from me, don’t touch me.”
I pushed her away and marched directly to Noel.
“Why did you do this?”
He looked up from a pile of documents, his brow furrowed, his gaze cold and tinged with disdain.
“I warned you long ago not to go against me. Now that the design is useless to you, give it to Lydia.”
His voice was cold and flat, condescending.
I glanced at Lydia and smirked. “Give it to her? Don’t even think about it. I’d rather feed it to the

dogs first. There’s no way I’m giving it to her!”
“Elena, why won’t you give it to me? Don’t you want me to win? If I win, Noel and Mom will be so happy. Don’t you want our family to be happy?”
She looked pure and innocent, as though deeply hurt, and questioned me with a sense of victimhood.
“Whether you’re happy or not is none of my concern.”
“Elena, you…”
“Lydia, please leave for now,” Noel interrupted.
“But what about my design? Noel, you
promised to help me!”

Lydia pouted and stomped her foot, waving her
arms.
Her childlike demeanor always made Noel and Mom feel sorry for her. I remembered Lena used
to act like this when she was a child.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get you something even better. Just go outside for now, okay?” Noel said, patting her head and gently pushing her out the door.
When he turned back to me, his gaze was once again cold and disdainful.
He approached me, his intimidating presence causing me to step back involuntarily.

You’re trying to use this competition as a stepping stone to study abroad. Let me make it clear–you’re going nowhere, and you’d better not entertain such thoughts!”
Yes, I’m going nowhere because Lydia might need my blood at any moment.
Because of Lydia, I’m forever trapped in this cold, unfeeling place.
I’m not willing to accept this.
“You think you can trap me like this?”
“Check for yourself.”
His voice was soft but carried a chilling, intimidating weight.
