Chapter 275 I'm Late
Bella stood still at the station, holding Finn, listening to the train's sound fade away until it was completely gone.
Her heart ached, like the train had run right over it, making her cry.
Finn reached out his tiny, soft hand to wipe her tears, whispering, "Mommy."
Bella hugged him tighter, braving the wind and snow, and started walking home. She cried silently the whole way, even as it got dark.
It felt like her life was a path she had to walk to the end, no matter how dark it got, without looking back.
What she owed Oliver, she'd repay in the next life.
She thought the hardest thing in life was behind her, but she had no idea an even bigger challenge was coming.
She and Finn made it through their second New Year together.
Every month, she'd take Finn to see Zachary.
Zachary watched helplessly as Finn grew from a baby, unable to hold him. But just seeing him brought Zachary some comfort.
Zachary's condition got worse, and Bella noticed.
She usually took Finn with her to the market stall. Afraid he'd run off, she had to put him in a stroller with toys to keep him busy. But when he played alone for too long, he'd cry, and if business was busy, she didn't even have time to hold and comfort him. The old lady selling vegetables next to her often helped soothe Finn.
Maybe this was an example of good things happening to good people.
In August, one night shortly after Finn's second birthday, Bella got a sudden phone call.
After hanging up, she rushed to the hospital with Finn.
At the hospital entrance, a few police officers were stationed.
After Bella showed them her driver's license and marriage certificate, they led her to the ward.
Stepping into the room, she saw Zachary lying on the bed, barely alive.
In his current state, Zachary had no chance of escaping, but there were still many police officers inside and outside the room, creating a solemn atmosphere.
Zachary lay motionless with an oxygen mask, the only sign of life being the fluctuating lines on the monitor.
Bella sat by the bed holding Finn, her eyes dry but unable to shed tears.
She even felt like giving a wry smile. It felt like God was playing a cruel joke on her. She had been living so hard, just holding onto hope, not fearing how far the end was as long as there was hope.
But now, God was going to take away her only hope!
A police officer showed her Zachary's medical record, which stated end-stage kidney failure.
When Jennifer had kidney failure, Zachary had donated a kidney to her, and now he was facing the same situation. The police said his illness was discovered last year, but he didn't allow them to inform his family or accept any treatment, and now it was too late.
Bella held his hand; this was their first physical contact since he was captured.
Zachary's hand was large, with rough calluses, much coarser than before.
Bella opened Zachary's palm, placed Finn's tiny hand in it, and then wrapped his large hand around the small one.
She said to him, "I'm here. Open your eyes and look. Finn's right here. Don't you miss me? Don't you want to say something to me?"
Bella's voice was calm, like she was just chatting with her husband on a regular day.
Maybe there really was some kind of connection because Zachary's eyelashes fluttered, and he slowly opened his eyes.
Seeing Bella and Finn, a comforting smile spread across his sickly face, and his large hand gently held both of theirs.
"I love you. Having you in this life, I have no regrets."
His voice was faint, but his tone was full of comfort and satisfaction.
Bella pushed down the pain in her heart and spoke in the most ordinary tone, "I said
I'd wait for you, and I have been. Waiting for our family to reunite in 15 years. If you leave early, isn't that too unfair?"
Zachary smiled, raising his hand to touch her cheek.
"Find someone who loves you and live well. I will bless you."
Bella leaned over and kissed his lips, her voice finally breaking.
"Don't say that now. Let's try our best to treat you, okay? Finn and I will wait for you." Zachary's gaze never left Bella's face, filled with love and reluctance.
"This might be a relief for both of us. I'm sorry, not only did I fail to take good care of you in this life, but I also brought you suffering. If we meet again in the next life, stay away from me. I'm afraid I won't be able to control myself and will fall in love with you at first sight."
Bella's eyes felt sore and swollen, and her vision finally blurred.
Jennifer rushed back overnight.
As soon as she entered the room, she threw herself at the bedside, crying that she wanted to give him back his kidney. Zachary smiled, the most heartbreaking smile Bella had ever seen on him.
Later, Zachary asked Bella to take Finn out, saying Finn was too young to stay in the hospital room for too long. Bella knew he must have something to say to Jennifer alone, so she took Finn out of the room.noveldrama
When she went back in, Jennifer's eyes were swollen from crying, and Zachary looked like he was barely hanging on.
Bella placed Finn beside him, and he kissed Finn's face, finally shedding tears.
That autumn night, Zachary passed away.
According to the organ donation agreement Zachary had signed earlier, his organs were donated to those in need.
Zachary had done many wrong things in his life, but his organs saved many people, rescuing several desperate families.
Before removing his organs, the doctors collectively bowed to him, and the families of the organ recipients also came to express their gratitude.
Zachary had done wrong, but he knew it, and he used his utmost sincerity to atone for his sins at the end.
If there was a next life, he hoped he would be a purely good person.
After getting back to Starlight City, Oliver took over Blue Ocean Bar again, and for the next six months, he was completely lost.
Ethan was gone, Bella didn't love him anymore, and Oliver was just going through the motions.
It wasn't until Oliver found out Ethan was still alive that he snapped out of it, but he started living recklessly, indulging in food, booze, and wasting his youth.
Late at night, Oliver would either drink himself into oblivion or let the longing and heartache drown him.
People often said time healed all wounds, but he thought that was just because their wounds weren't deep enough.
After experiencing such a great love, no other woman could enter his heart. One night, Oliver was singing karaoke with some friends in a private room when a waiter came in and said, "Oliver, someone's looking for you."
"Who?" Oliver asked, holding the microphone.
"A young lady."
As soon as the waiter said that, everyone else started teasing.
"Oliver, looks like you've got a romantic encounter!"
"Go on!"
Oliver tossed the microphone aside and walked out of the room.
The waiter pointed to a young woman sitting at the bar.
"That's her."
Oliver put the lit cigarette in his mouth, but when he looked over, he froze, forgetting
to take a drag.
He took the cigarette out and walked over to sit beside her.
"What do you want to drink? It's on me."
As soon as the young woman saw him, she stood up immediately.
"I'm here to deliver a letter."
The young woman was none other than Jennifer.
She took a letter out of her bag and placed it on the bar.
Oliver glanced at the envelope; it didn't look like Bella's handwriting.
Jennifer said, "Sorry, this letter is a year late. I thought I should respect his wishes. Now that I've delivered it, I'll be going."
Jennifer turned and left after speaking.
Oliver's gaze fell on the letter again, but he seemed to lack the courage to pick it up. He asked the bartender for a drink, downed it in one gulp, then put down the glass and grabbed the envelope, tearing it open.
Zachary: [Oliver, by the time you receive this letter, I should already be dead. I made many mistakes, so I got what I deserved. If you need to hate someone, hate me. Bella is very innocent and pure. If you still love Bella, treat her well for the rest of your life.]
In the underground fight club, a bloody match had just ended.
The club owner handed Bella $100,000, smiling as he said, "People rarely see a woman who can fight like that. You saw how excited everyone was. Go home and take care of yourself. Next time, challenge a stronger opponent, and there will be more money." Bella wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth, took the money, and gave a bleak smile. She said nothing and turned to walk to the changing room.
Phones weren't allowed inside, so when she changed and took out her phone, she saw many missed calls, all from Finn's kindergarten teacher. She tried to call back but her phone died.
Bella grabbed her clothes and ran out, hailing a cab straight to the school.
As she approached the classroom, she heard arguing inside.
"Mom, he hit me first."
Finn said, "You're the one who said I don't have a dad. You called me a bastard."
Hearing Finn's tearful defense, Bella's heart tightened.
She quickly walked in, and the teacher immediately came up to her.
"Bella, Finn injured a classmate. I tried calling you but couldn't reach you. We need to resolve this. The other parent wants an apology and to discuss medical expenses."
Bella looked at Finn and saw a bruise on his forehead.
When he saw Bella, he lowered his head, as if afraid of being scolded.
Bella pulled him in front of her, knelt down to straighten his clothes, and gently rubbed
his forehead.
"Does it hurt?"
Finn thought Bella would scold him, but her first words were asking if he was hurt. The usually strong Finn couldn't help but tear up.
"How do you educate Finn? How could he hit someone? He really has no manners."
A sharp voice came from the side.
Bella looked over and saw a stylishly dressed woman holding a little boy with cotton
stuffed in his nostrils, likely from a nosebleed.
Bella stood up and looked calmly at the overbearing woman.
"Ma'am, your manners are quite eye-opening. Wasn't it your son who insulted him
first?"
The woman was momentarily speechless. The boy in her arms said, "Mom, he hit me first."
At this, Finn suddenly started crying.
"Mom, I didn't mean to. He called me a bastard, said I didn't have a dad."
The little boy defended himself, "I was just repeating what others said. Everyone says
he's a bastard."
Finn's emotions suddenly flared up, crying loudly, "You're lying! I'm not a bastard. I have a dad."
Finn anxiously tugged at Bella's clothes.
"Mom, you told me Dad went abroad. If I'm obedient, he'll come back. Mom, tell them
I have a dad. I'm not a bastard."
Finn's crying broke Bella's heart, and her inner strength seemed on the verge of
collapsing.
Since becoming a mother, she had become both stronger and more fragile.
"I'm sorry I'm late!"
The sudden voice made Bella's whole body tremble.
It was a voice she was familiar with, one she would never forget.
She slowly turned to look at the classroom door.
He would never know how much his sudden appearance at that moment shocked her,
like a hand reaching out when she was sinking into quicksand, or a beam of light piercing through the darkness.
Oliver walked step by step to her, his gaze never leaving her.
After a moment of staring, he gently raised his hand, his thumb touching the bruise at
the corner of her mouth. His expression was calm, hiding the joy and pain of their long-awaited reunion deep within.
She looked at him, her eyes turning red.
His gaze shifted to Finn, and then he bent down to pick him up.
Oliver said firmly, "I'm sorry you were wronged. Daddy's back!"
What do you think?
