Chapter 900
Chapter 900
Emelie took her mother's hand. She held up her dress and walked up the illuminated steps to the stage, where all eyes were on her.
She calmly addressed the crowd: "My mother has said everything that needs to be said. I won't keep you long. I just want to announce that I will be returning to Cedonia to formally reopen the Xander case. After 28 years, it's time to bring this story to a close."
Her brief statement, combined with her resolute demeanor, convinced everyone that she was determined to seek justice, no matter what.NôvelDrama.Org owns © this.
Wesley was the first to clap, though he was standing in a corner where no one could see him. Hence, no one knew it was him.
Soon, applause spread throughout the grand hall, growing louder until it was thunderous.
The applause could be for many reasons: support from friends and family, appreciation for the dramatic story, or simply joining in the crowd's enthusiasm.
It didn't matter whether it was mocking them or out of goodwill. A major news story was about to break that night, prompting the reinvestigation of a case from 28 years ago.
In a corner, Elias sipped his drink. "I thought Ms. Pierce would take the stage herself."
Jayden replied, "She isn't a direct witness to the Xander case. Yennifer is. Ms. Pierce would only be speaking from a third-party perspective, which wouldn't engage the audience as strongly. Yennifer, on the other hand, can not only clarify the events but also make them compelling."
Otherwise, there might be doubts like, "You were so young back then. How could you know about these events? Where did you hear this from? Are you trying to use storytelling to interfere with justice just like the four families used public opinion to influence the courts?"
With Yennifer speaking, there would be no such doubts. After all, she was the victim and the plaintiff.
Elias smirked. "I noticed another detail. Cronus and Tethys are actually characters from Grielor mythology. Cronus is the father of Zeus. Do you know who Cronus's wife was?"
That was trivial knowledge, and no one knew the answer.
Elias, who had once indulged in studying Grielor mythology, explained meaningfully, "His wife was his biological sister, Rhea."
Everyone was silent.
Elias continued, "And Tethys's husband, Oceanus, was also her biological brother."
Again, everyone was silent.
Jayden pinched his brow and decided to move past the awkward topic. "Grielor mythology is just like that. Let's not dwell on it."
Emelie descended from the stage and walked directly to Ashley. "I'll leave the rest to you now, Ms. Thornton."
Ashley replied, "I'll give it my all."
Of course, Emelie trusted her.
Elias suddenly remembered a minor detail.
When William failed to acquire SAM and returned to Cedonia, he was hospitalized with a sudden illness.
During his visit, Elias and Jayden had noticed his unusual concern for Ashley's well-being, and his insistence on taking good care of her, mentioning that she might be needed in the future.
Could it be that he anticipated Emelie would enlist Ashley to help reopen the case, which was why he had given such advice?
If that was the case, it was no wonder he managed to get himself a wife. Elias admired his thorough planning and strategic thinking.
The evening ended amid a variety of thoughts and feelings.
Outside, a storm was brewing, but the two people driving through the streets of Mercianna were not concerned. They were tired and ready to enjoy some alone time together.
In the early hours of the morning in Mercianna, the streets were deserted. Only the moon and stars kept them company. They drove up to the mountaintop and stopped at the edge of a cliff.
Emelie got out of the car and climbed onto the roof using the car's ladder. She had chosen an SUV specifically for this purpose, to take in the view of the mountains from the roof.
She took a deep breath and embraced the night.
William didn't climb up but stood below, smiling up at her.
Emelie sat on the edge of the roof and looked down at him. "Tomorrow, I'm heading back to Cedonia to start preparing for the case. You'll stay at the Denning Residence for treatment.
"Until you're summoned back, you're not allowed to go anywhere or get involved in anything. I've arranged for Ashton to keep an eye on you."
William smiled at her. "Alright."
Emelie let her legs dangle and swung them casually.
William looked at the moon behind her. "Congratulations in advance."
"Congratulations for what?" she asked.
"For achieving your long-sought justice and finally being able to hold your head high," he replied.
Emelie pressed her lips together. Then, she decided to jump off the car roof.
William, startled, reached out to catch her. He stepped back two paces due to the momentum but held her tightly.
