EPISODE 54 Well built wall
NEW YORK
THREE WEEKS LATER
MEAGAN’S APARTMENT
Meagan stepped out of the bathroom after having a cold shower. She already had a long day at work, attending to patients, running down to the emergency ward, a patient in coma who had a seizure and then Mr James coming around for his check up. She haven’t had an eight hours sleep since the past five days but lucky for her, she was off work tomorrow.
Meagan loves her job so much but there are days when she would wonder if she should really have considered being a lawyer.
Her stomach made a loud rumbling sound. She didn’t have the chance to eat since yesterday afternoon which is a very no long time. She was hungry. Meagan wore her pajamas before making her way to the kitchen to grab something from the fridge to munch on as she settles to cook a good meal for dinner.
She opened the fridge to find just a bag of potato chips and a green apple in it. The fridge was empty because it has been so long since she went on a grocery shopping. She stared at the bag of potato chips and green apple.
“I might starve to death. How on earth did I not remember buying groceries on my way back home?” Meagan grumbled as she grabbed the bag of potato and a bottle of water. And as she walked to the living room, she concluded that she would head out after finishing her chips.
As Meagan settled on the couch, her cellphone buzzed. She reached for it and saw a message from Jones. She clicked on the screen and read the message.
“Hi Meagan, am I calling at the wrong time? I mean are you still busy at work?” He added a smiley emoji.
Meagan texted back. “I am home.”
And Jones call came in almost immediately and she picked up.
“Hello Jones, good evening.” Meagan greeted.Text © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.
“Hello, Meagan. How are you doing?” He asked.
“I am fine. I just got back from work not too long ago.” Meagan lay on the couch and opened the bag of potato.
“What’s that?” Jones heard the sound over the phone.
“A bag of potato. I am hungry. And I just realized that my fridge is empty with just a bag of potato and green apple in it.” She replied.
“Meagan, when last did you have a good meal?” Jones asked.
“I can’t remember. I have been surviving on just snacks and soda for days now.” Meagan ate a crunchy chip.
Jones let out a breathe. “That’s too bad. I told you never to skip your meals. You work so hard enough so you should eat healthily.”
“Yes doctor Jones.” Meagan giggled.
“So what’s the plan?” Jones asked.
“I’ll find time to do grocery shopping soon or probably tomorrow morning.” Meagan responded followed by a yawn.
“You can’t wait till tomorrow. You need to eat something good. Listen Meagan, I am done with my work at the office so how about we have dinner somewhere nice and probably buy groceries together too?” Jones requested politely.
“It’s a good offer and I can’t turn it down. Alright, let’s eat out.” Meagan answered. “What time would you be here?” She sat up on the couch.
“Soon… expect me in about twenty minutes.” His response was sharp and immediate.
Meagan couldn’t help but smile. “I’ll be waiting.” Then Jones ended the call without saying anything else.
Meagan jumped to her feet and went into the bedroom to change her pajamas. It wasn’t the first, second or third time that she would be having dinner with Jones. In the past three weeks, they have gotten so close than she never expected. It was becoming like a normal routine to go out with Jones on her off days and sometimes he would call at her home to say hi.
The relationship was a friendly one and it hasn’t gone beyond that level. Jones was trying to take things slow with Meagan so he wouldn’t lose her again like he had done in the past. He had been too persistent in the past and the pressure on her to date him was so obvious. But now, Jones was working towards making Meagan get familiar with and comfortable around him. He knew Meagan was trying to withdraw herself from men due to her past relationship which she already briefed him.
Jones hopes that Meagan would be more open to him and let down the solid walls that she has built around her heart.
After fussing about what to wear, Meagan opted in for a black polo on a grey leather trouser and paired it with a slide. A simple wear that made her comfortable. She brushed her hair and packed it up in a bun style.
About half an hour later, the door bell jangled and Meagan rushed out of the room to answer it. Jones stood outside her door, a bright smile on his face as he looked straight into her eyes.
“Come in,” Meagan opened the door wide for him to step in.
“What’s in those bags?” She asked pointing at the bags he was holding.
“Groceries.” Jones answered
“What? I thought.. we had plans to do it together.” Meagan screwed up her face.
“Time has gone. If we have dinner… you might be too tired to do the groceries shopping. I just made things easier for the both of us.” He bought enough groceries from the numbers of bags he dumped on the couch.
“Isn’t this too much for just one mouth to feed?” Meagan counted the bags-six in total.
Jones chuckled. “It will last you for a long time since you are always too busy at work.” He answered.
“So how much does it cost so I can repay you?” Meagan asked as she pointed at the bags.
“There won’t be any need refunding me. I got them for you.” Jones tucked his right hand into his pocket.
“No Jones…” She paused knowing Jones won’t accept for her to refund him.
“What?” He asked.
“I’ll only accept these groceries if you agree to let me pay for our dinner.” Meagan stated with a serious look on her face.
Jones shook his head. “You always want to have your way.”
Meagan let out a giggle that had Jones smiling brightly. “Alright. Dinner is on you tonight.” He agreed.
“So which restaurant are we visiting? And what food should we eat for dinner?” Meagan grabbed her cellphone and dropped it in the mini bag on her body.
“What do you want this time?” Jones asked.
“Italian food. I love it!” Meagan replied.
“I knew it. I picked blue hill restaurant. I heard they have a new Italian recipe that has made people cue at their doorstep.” Jones said.
“Yeah.. I heard it too.” Meagan nodded. “So we have to wait for our turn?” She asked as they motioned towards the door.
“No, a good friend works there so I already booked a spot for us in advance.” Jones answered.
“Alright.” Meagan locked the door and walked up to meet Jones in the car.
He ignited the car that roared back to life, he pulled out of the private driveway and hit the road.
