Chapter 1041
The whole treasure thing? Just a rumor. People had whispered about it for a hundred years, but no one really knew if some stash from the warlord days actually existed or if it was just a story someone made up. Connor never thought he'd seriously start chasing after it. Either he was completely out of options, or he knew more than anyone else about where it might be.
After dinner, everyone ended up in the living room. A bunch of people gathered around Summer and Tim. The Shaw family was well aware of who Summer really was-Lucas and Linda's kid.
For the past two years, Lucas had used Chloe's amnesia to have her play the part of Summer's mom. Cassie had never gotten over that. Tim had basically grown up with her these past couple of years. In her heart, Tim was like her own son.
It made her furious to think Chloe had been tricked into raising someone else's child, while her own boy was growing up apart from her. Especially since Cassie knew all the messy history between Lucas and Linda—she'd never liked either of them.
Cassie pulled Chloe aside. "Summer isn't even your kid. Why'd you bring him back?"
"After everything Lucas did to you, you're still going to raise his son?"
She glanced over at Summer, who was sitting on the couch playing quietly with his blocks. "I get that you guys have gotten close these past two years, but he's not your son. You should send him back to the Moncada family."
The Moncadas knew Chloe was back and had already said they'd be coming to Eldridge City in a few days.
Summer looked like he was absorbed in his toys, but he was listening to every word Cassie and Chloe said. He'd even overheard the housekeeper whispering earlier that night-saying he wasn't really Chloe's son.
His tears started falling, landing on the little blocks in his hands.
Tim noticed right away. "Aaron, why are you crying?"
Chloe hadn't had a chance to explain anything to Cassie, but she heard Tim and rushed over. She scooped Summer up in her arms. "Aaron, what's wrong?"
He just kept his head down, lips trembling, trying so hard to keep it together. But the tears wouldn't stop.
Chloe carried him out onto the balcony. She knelt down in front of him, gently wiping his tears. "Aaron, tell me what's wrong."
Finally, Summer looked up at her, eyes shining with tears. "Mom, am I really not your child?"
He didn't understand everything that had happened between his mom and dad. He just knew Dad had lied to Mom, and Mom was angry. Then she left with Uncle Connor, leaving Dad all alone in Japan. He'd always thought that once Mom calmed down, she'd go back.
Chloe looked him in the eye, serious and gentle. "Of course you're my child. How could you not be? Go lookin the mirror-we're practically noveldrama
Summer considered that for a moment, and slowly, his tears stopped.
Chloe squeezed his little arm. “Aaron, you'll always be my child. I'll always be your
mom. I'll always love you. Nothing will ever change that."
Summer nodded. "I love you too, Mom."
Chloe smiled, pulling him into a tight hug. When she finally let him go, Summer looked up and asked quietly, “Mom, when are we going back to Japan?”
What do you think?
