Chapter 1043
Summer wandered over and started taking off his clothes.
"Uncle Connor, I can bathe myself," he announced, his voice small but confident.
Connor reached out and gently ruffled Summer's hair. "Alright, I'll let you."
The bathtub was overflowing with bubbles, so thick that Summer's little body disappeared beneath the frothy surface. But Connor didn't leave. Instead, he sat down on the edge of the tub, staying close.
"Aaron, I want to talk to you. Just us, man to man," Connor said.
Summer, who had been quiet up until now, finally lifted his head. His big, dark eyes locked onto Connor's. "What is it?"
Connor hesitated, then asked, "Why do you want to go back to Japan?"
Summer looked away, his face turned toward the wall. "I'm not really Mom's child. Tim is. I shouldn't be here."
As he spoke, Summer instinctively drew his knees up and hugged them, like he was trying to make himself smaller, to disappear into the bubbles. He kept his face averted, as if he didn't want Connor to see how he felt.
Connor asked gently, "How do you know you're not your mom's child?"
Summer answered quietly, "I hear everything you all say. My real dad is Lucas, my mom is Linda. And when my dad took Mom to Japan, I was already three years old. How could I be her child?"
Connor was surprised by how much the boy understood.
He reached over and carefully turned Summer's face towards him, his expression serious. "Do you know how babies are born?"
Summer nodded, looking thoughtful
and serious, like a much older kid. "I
read about it in a science book. Babies are made when an egg and sperm come together to make an embryo, and then it grows in the mother's womb. The embryo becomes a baby, and the baby is born from her belly."
Connor couldn't help but be impressed. At only five, Summer explained it so matter-of-factly.
"So, imagine the embryo comes from person A's egg, but is put in person B's womb. When the baby is born, who do you think their mother is?"
Summer frowned, really thinking about it. "A is the biological mother."noveldrama
Connor smiled softly. "Aaron, that's exactly it. You're just like that baby. A is your mom, and B is Linda. Even though you were born from Linda, you have your real mom's genes. She's your mother in every way that matters."
Shock flickered across Summer's face.
After a long pause, he blurted out, "Uncle Connor, surrogacy is illegal."
Connor almost laughed. He definitely hadn't seen that coming.
He reached over and ruffled Summer's hair again. "I just wanted you to know where you come from. You are your mother's child, and nothing will ever change that. As for why things happened the way they did that's all grown-up stuff. None of it is your fault."
Connor's tone turned serious, his eyes gentle. Aaron, everything that happens in life is fate, including your birth. No matter what goes on between adults, one thing will never change: we all love you. You dad, your mom, Linda who brought you into the world, and me."
Summer looked up at Connor, his eyes full of confusion and uncertainty.
"Can you really accept me? I'm Mom's child with someone else. Doesn't that make you sad?"
Every one of Summer's questions took Connor by surprise.
"I love you, Aaron. I love you because I love your mom. Everything about her, anything connected to her, matters to me. And you-you're her child. don't feel sad about that at all. If anything, I think you're @gift. I'm so grateful you've been with her these past two years, making her happy."
What do you think?
